Engine cooling problem
John b2013-08-01 01:33 UTC
On the way out to tonight's race I ran through some sea weed. It didn't
seem to be a problem but a few minutes later my engine overheats. I
checked the water strainer, water intake line and engine impeller.
Everything seemed clear. I found that of I kept the rpm's medium to slow
the engine did not overheat. At full throttle the temperature went up.
Tomorrow I plan to replace hoses and the thermostat as well as further
check the thru hull.
Anyone have any other ideas?
BTW the race was cancelled which left us in first place for the series.

Sounds like the problem I am having. I re-propped to a 3 blade for more
power when motoring to windward. With a two blade, and the chop we
experience in the Neuse river, 3 swells less than 2 boat lengths a part, we
would slam into every third wave and practically stop the boat. With a
three blade, we still hit the third wave but the prop gets us back to speed
quicker.
I noticed the past weekend, we were motoring to windward in fairly flat
seas. Trying to maintain max speed 6kn or so. After about 30 min, the over
temp buzzer sounded. Dropped the rpm to about 2500 rpm or 5 and half knots,
we motored on.
I think we have an over propped issue. Not going to change anything at the
moment though, just need to keep the rpms down and dont get in a hurry!
For some reason the engineers at yanmar designed the tack to read 2000 rpm
to be straight up on the tack! It seems to run best at this speed and cruses
at about 5 ½ knots in flat water. I am not really OCD but it works!

You may have weed on your prop, rudder, etc.

You could have weed plugging part of the through hull that hasn't made it
up the line or the strainer.

Thanks to everyone who has replied, today I went to the boat and checked the
intake to be sure there was no blockage, checked out fine, replaced all
suction side water hoses just in case they were collapsing.
I have had a bad thermostat, stuck open, so I tried to change that but brass
screws with slotted heat are not a good idea, especially with limited access
as I result I could not change it.
At the end of the day it still seems like the engine is getting hot at high
RPM's I will admit that I chickened out before the temperature got too high
and let the engine cool down. I think the exhaust sound has changed it
seems like there is more of a high velocity jet sound but this may be
because I am running at high speed in my slip with my head over the transom.
Any new ideas, I'll be back at it tomorrow. Don't want to waste a good
season, 11 starts 10 firsts 1 second!

Have not followed this thread that close, but perhaps can offer something no one else has. Check the outgoing side. A few years back I have a overheating problem that resulted in the 9 inch hose from exit to the muffler had collapsed inward . It was a internal double hose, so from the outside it appears just fine, but when taken off you can see that inside it collapsed in a few areas preventing good flow outward. Changed it out and problem went away.
Good luck. Nick

Ok, here is another check, may or may not be relevant since I did not
observe the overheat issue on our boat. The outlet from the water pump,
also feeds into the exhaust elbow at the back of the engine. At some point
I had a issue with the water not getting injected into the outflow of the
exhaust, so I started checking where the stoppage occurred. The inside of
the exhaust elbow had rusted to the point of blocking the line. A small
screwdriver was able to clear the blockage, and the system seemed to work as
"normal".
Research into the system, Yanmar recommends replacement of the exhaust elbow
on a 5 year interval. If you see signs of rust on the outside, it is well
past time to change it out.
I can envision a scenario where at high RPM the water flow is blocked to
cause over heating, but at low RPM and less load on the engine, the water
flow even restricted would keep the engine below the "overheat" warning.
YMMV

And there is a smaller outlet tube leading off the exhaust elbow on the Yanmar that can also clog up. Same fix with a screwdriver.
