I was looking at an outboard repair site and they stressed the importance of checking the rubber impellers in cooling systems, that they can become hardened and brittle by just sitting around. Is it possible that revving up the motor improves the seal on the impeller blades? I know its time for me to replace mine, I guess it's been four or five years now-wow how time flies-and I'd rather not throw a blade, block the pump outlet channel and seize me motor again, me OB might not have nine lives. I wonder, is there one impeller maker better than others? RE: [Cal_Boats] Engine cooling problem

John Boyce2013-08-02 21:34 UTC
Thanks again for all of the ideas on my overheating problem, I now have a new problem … straightening a 65 year old back after 3 hours in the bowels of the boat! After investigating all of the hoses etc on the water system and replacing most of them, a job I have been intending to do for some time I found no problem, but after running the engine for over 30 minutes there is no sign of overheating but the long non-funtioning thermostat seems to be working. I think what happened was that the inlet thru hull became plugged by sea weed, the engine overheated and water pressure relief valve (I never knew that there was one on the boat) popped. After I stopped the blockage went away, possibly due to steam pressure. During this time whatever was holding the thermostat open and keeping the engine running at below normal temperature was released. Subsequently when I restarted the engine I saw the temperature rise, which I was not used to, and panicked (or behaved in a prudent but erroneous manner) and cut back the throttle which lowered the temperature. I this sounds like a convoluted series of events but it seems to fit the facts, “…when all other possibilities are disproven, the remaining explanation no matter how illogical must be the answer. Sherlock Holmes” or at least its good fiction.
