Gas Smell

I'm getting a strong gas smell in the cabin when the boat has been closed up for a day or so. I have checked all the lines, no leaks that I could find. Today I removed the cover from the fuel tank vent and could not smell anything from it. Could it be blocked? Would that cause the problem? I am at a loss. The usual Atomic 4 engine for a 29. Thanks, David Dobbs CAL 29 411.

Metal tank? If rusting can leak tiny amounts and smell Jim Englert Hi-Tech Engraving 757-873-3639 Email in… [at] Hi-TechEngraving.com On Aug 4, 2013, at 5:33 PM, david dobbs <tm… [at] yahoo.com> wrote: > I'm getting a strong gas smell in the cabin when the boat has been closed up for a day or so. Hi Jim, A couple of thouights. The most likely problem is the "rubber" gas lines. With the addition of ethanol the hoses can deteriorate failrly quickly. You could try the head-hose test. Wipe the hoses firmly with a clean rag, see if the rag smells of gas. You might try smelling the area around the carb - might be leaking if the needle valve is letting the bowl overfill. Check the underside of the gas tank with your hand. I had that happen many years ago and replaced the tank with an identical metal one, which I just replaced with a plastic one. If you replace it, get a plastic tank. I went through the aluminum vs plastic debate and ended up with a plastic one. I had electrolysis from the old metal tank against a bronze fitting and it rotted out part of the boat (wood).
