Cal 39 in the new Robert Redford film
Greg vanDalen2013-08-05 14:53 UTC
At least it looks a lot like a Cal 39. Not sure if the movie will be any good, but it's nice to see a Cal boat making it on the big screen.

I suppose it DOESNT include the disclaimer that "No Cals were hurt in the
making of this movie"...

Apparently the credits state that three 1978 Cal 39's gave their life for the sake of the movie.

Here is a link to some notes on the movie production - looks like it is a
Cal - 3 of them to be exact.

You thought they really had a film crew down below in the cabin? I am sure
they had to cut at least one in half to turn it into a set rather than a
boat.
Movie sounds pretty depressing. I would like to know how it turns out so
if anyone finds a spoiler, please post a link (with a caution that it is a
spoiler of course).

All,
Lynn and I found the movie promo kind of creepy.
One of the boats filmed was /Tenacious,/ hull #20.
We have hull #18.

This horror movie may be good for sailing. My hang gliding instructor said whenever there was a gruesome hang gliding accident which made the headlines, his phone would be ringing off the hook from people wanting to learn how to hang glide.
Despite the threat of major flotsam from the Japanese earthquake mining the ocean with debris, the Transpac had it's largest fleet in years.
It's possible these were hurricane damaged boats that no one wanted? It's a thought.
And just think, instead of trying to sail across the ocean in a relatively small boat, one could always play it safe and just go for a stroll on the Venice Beach board walk.

SWELL, was:Cal 39 in the new Robert Redford film
Gerald Sobel2013-08-06 18:18 UTC
Too bad we don't have an inspirational movie about the exploits of Liz Clark and her Cal 40 'Swell'. I found here web site and the latest post is about getting T boned in Tahiti while being moored in a bay, by an inconsiderate charter boat.
Maybe Robert Redford will take on such a project next? Maybe a letter writing campaign is in order.

I know the previous owner of the Cal 39, or at least one them that "starred" in this film. It was a boat named Orion out of MDR.
The story of Liz and Swell is awesome. I agree, getting t-boned by the other boat was rather "inconsiderate" of them to say the least.
