Control Cable
Jason Dickinson2013-08-13 06:23 UTC
Hello,
First time boat owner here. I just bought a Cal 29. Last weekend I was out
sailing and on the way back I noticed I was locked in forward. Upon further
inspection, it appears the control cable came loose from the bracket. It
looks like I have the ability to lock it back in with some effort, but it
appears to me the condition of the cable may require that I replace it.
I've attached a picture of the suspected area of concern. I'm wondering if
this just looks a little worn or if this looks, as I feel, like it's given
up the ghost and I should replace it.
Thanks.
Jason

Jason,
I would remove the engine end of the cable, see if it moves smoothly.
If it is rough or moves hard, replace it. If it moves easily, check
the engine side to be sure it is OK. BTW, your picture didn't work.

Jason,
Welcome to the group! plenty of 29 owners, myself included. Where do you sail? Do you know the hull number? Is yours a 29 or 2-29? Tiller or wheel? A-4 or diesel? Mine is a 29, but with wheel steering and an A-4. I sail out of Chicago on Lake Michigan. One of our members, David Wilkie Owen has a nice website that shows some of the improvements he made. mariposasailing.com

Welcome,
I have a CAL 2-29 and enjoy sailing her. I think you will love it. She sails in the light stuff and stiffens up in a breeze. I just got back from Tacoma, Wa. and sailed on a fellow list members CAl 2-29. She was in pristine condition and we raced in her local beer can racing. What fun.
Good to see other CAL 29 out here.
I have the A4 also, was not able to see the picture on the site. I have had problems with the cable and shift bracket. I made a new one with 90 degree angle aluminum and bolted it all together. I will try to send you a pict off line. Also, mine has plenty of shift cable left, it seems they installed one size fits all. So you may get away with cutting a foot off to reinstall fresh cable.

I've seen references by various people but I have no idea where to look on my '69. But it must be fairly low.
