Rudder and tiller for Cal 29.
Randy2013-08-22 17:44 UTC
Hey all.
Out Patient broke a steering cable in the Tri Point last weekend. The steering pedistal is 40 years old and looks like it has never been opened. I have been soaking the stainless screws in the control head all week in PB Blaster.
I always threatened I would replace the wheel with a tiller.
SOOOO, If the screws don't come out and I end up with a downed boat, anyone know of a rudder and tiller available I can buy?
Oh buy the way. If you have an emergency tiller. Carry a pipe to put over the end of it. There is way to much torque on that little T bar to be effective. Just saying.

Continental Marine in Quincy, MA cut up a 29 last summer. They run a good sized used parts operation.
Good Luck

I hate to grind screws out at the split in the quandrant then bought a new Edson quandrant
the yard did some drill some holes and in it went.
that was 2005 seems fine.

I'm wondering if a a heat gun and an impact driver that's had it's point sitting on a block of dry ice wouldn't do the trick. After soaking in solvent, maybe it would break free...or...maybe not.
I'm going to have to re-attack getting my OB fly wheel off to instal a new spark coil. Thank goodness I found my Dad's half inch drive kit, me crew has a metric socket, and the local auto chains have torque wrenches you can borrow if you give them a deposit. Then, I'll have me aux power again after nearly a year doing without. I will need to fix it before labor day, which is the big Pirate/Bucanner .oh yeah..it's called the OUTLAW regatta: from MdR to Seal Beach, with terrific dinner & party after. Hope they have the same band they had last year...totally totally totally first class at the level of the best in the world. All you all in MdR, don't miss this event. The best part is the sleigh ride thru hurricane gulch, surfing by the ships entering the harbor..tho lately they weren't any to worry about.
If I can't fix it I'm going to do the race anyway...and sail home all the way if need be.
Hope to stop in Catalina on the way home.

to install a new rudder you will have to get the quandrant off the rudder post.
drop the rudder not easy when in the water install new rudder also not easy
then will seal the bearing assembly mate up to the new rudder
so i see it this way
rudder 500.00?
tiller cheap
Quandrant 400.00 and readyto go
cable 50.00 high
clamps 20.00
labor 3 hours your time?
One last note to replace the cutlass bearing the easy way you would have to drop the rudder
so sooner or later some one would have to deal with problem.

Randy,
If you go to a new rudder, consider using Foss Foam in California. I got a new rudder from them that is an updated design, more elliptical. I don't race but I like it better than the original, even under power. I have a friend who races an Erickson 35, got a similar updated design from Foss, they win all the time.

we got a foss rudder for our 36, and I had to cut the top of the forward edge and reglass it to conform to the angle of the hull line...you have to install it up to almost in and then make your lines, set it back down and saw, recheck, and then put a new layer of cloth and resin on top of the removed surface and a band to bond that to the side of the rudder and fair out before you paint. we painted with 2000E for a waterproof seal, then the bottom paint over that. the stainless shaft if beefy. I added a fiber gasket/bushing to keep it smooth and not have contact with the hull paint. remember to bond something to it somehow to protect from electrolysis.on a 36 there's no place to bond so we added some extra washers to our shaft collar to clamp a wired zinc like those fish you hang pverboard when we are docked, the only metal to metal contact.(our shaft tube is all glass and resin), I believe this is why so many lose their rudders as the corrosion is
nearly invisible between the hull and rudder. We have found a tiller manufacturer, cant find info right now but will get it for you.and thanks for the tip about the emergency tiller extension. had to drive a santana 35 with a snapped off stub once. Helen

Last year I lost my steering quadrant about 3 miles from the marina and Randy is correct, it does take an exhausting amount of effort to steer in wind and current with just the emergency tee.

Foss (Probably) uses the rudder designed by Carl Schumacher, that we commissioned and developed on this list in 2000 for Cal 40’s and Cal 36’s.
He made 25 of them in the day.
Dennis Grant of LA also uses the plug for his carbon fiber version of the same rudder.
