I guess I need to reread the manual. Thanks. Michael D <md… [at] yahoo.com> wrote: Randy, Thanks for the input! Tell me more about the VMG and compass rose. I downloaded the 546 manual, and there are instructions for both. I like it for being able to see where you are, but it is more for fishing than sailors. No VMG and no compass rose. However, I did figure a way it does point to the mark and you can tack or gybe to it. Lasrt Wednesday the fog rolled in and we have a windward mark 2 miles off shore. The GPS said it was 600 ft at 10 o clock before we spotted the mark. Good coordinances. The scary part was when we sailed back to the harbor under spinnaker, GPS was pointing to the north entrance of the breakwater wall 540 ft at 1300. We could barely make out the shadow of the rocks. Good GPS... I am satisfied with it now. Randy

Ok, I looked up the manual. The compass rose IS that. It tells you what direction you are sailing. On my Garmin 76 it points to the waypoint. I will recheck it this weekend on the way to Santa Barbara. We have race up on Saturday and race home on Monday. VMG has to be Navigating a route to a waypoint. The screen is different when in Navigate To compared to Route To. Maybe I am impatient and push buttons to fast. Don't get me wrong. I like the unit. I needed something I could look at and not have to keep looking away or down at a handheld all the time. I mounted it on a swing away mount just in the companionway, so if you fall into it, it swings into the cabin. At night I swing it inside Just behind the bulkhead, so the light does not bother me and I am not sailing by GPS.. I just move my head to the side so I can see it real quick and find out where I am.. If the 7 inch screen was cheaper. I would of gotten that one. I like the big picture. The touch screen is spoiling. After having a smart phone with a touch screen, I keep trying to expand the chart plotter with my fingers instead of the buttons. Randy, On my 76C (a few years old) it can be routed from waypoint a to b and can either work as a rumline so I can stay below point b and come up to the mark with more speed. I can get an inside overlap....or set a course to waypoint b and wherever I am it will point to that mark...both are very useful. Mark Mark A.
