Tri_State Regatta

Okay you racers, tomorrow I will spend my day anchored on the finish line for the St.Joe, Mi. to Chicago race, 90 miles, and Monday the Michigan City In. to Chicago race, 32 miles. Just remember there is no racing without those who are willing to serve as race officials. Support your local club, and encourage your members to serve as race committee; it's really not as mysterious as you might think. Regards, David Dobbs CAL29 411, Jackson Park Yacht Club RC

David - Is this also called the 3 state race . . .or something like that? I ask because we have a former crew girl who moved out that way and found her way onto a 51 footer (I think) named "Scout" which is owned and run by a quadriplegic whose name I have forgotten. She emailed us and said the 50 mile race was delayed for an hour to let a thunderstorm pass and then they didn't finish until something like 2am after starting at 9ish. Apparently there is one or two more legs to this race that they do the next day. Is this your race? Paul, The Tri-State Regatta is a long standing event, starts in Chicago on Friday at 6pm, race to St. Joesph, Mi overnight, party all day Saturday, race to Michigan City, Indiana on Sunday, party again, race back to Chicago on Monday. Thus the 3 states, Il, Mi, In. Always over the Labor day weekend. In recent years we have added a race from St. Joe back to Chicago on Sunday for those who want to have Monday free. I just got home, after a stop at my club for dinner after finishing the Michigan City to Chicago leg. I also finished the St. Joe-Chicago race yesterday. It's a multi-club regatta, sailed under LMSRF sanctions. (Lake Michigan Sail Racing Federation), the local US Sailing organization. David - So I guess you sail to all the locations as well to do the starts etc (ie: party)? I have been thinking of trying to organize a similar race on the Chesapeake. Our club used to sponsor a race called the Transpeake back in the day before I was a member . . . Hell before I was a teenager LOL. Annapolis to Solomons, Solomons to Oxford, Oxford to Annapolis or something like that. If you have any advice on doing such a race I'd love to hear it. Paul, I don't race anymore, but work RC, have done both starts and finishes. I passed the US Sailing club race official test this year, have to write up my resume and submit it to the local pooh-bah to get official certification as a PRO. Organizing a regatta is a big undertaking. All our clubs belong to LMSRF, and our local piece is called Area III, runs from the Wisconsin border to the Michigan line. Each club has a rep, and they meet and decide on the race schedule, and other stuff. Area III has a boat-of-the-year trophy, and not all the races scheduled count for that, so serious racers concentrate on those. The Tri-State is part of BOY, so draws a good number. Each club is very protective of their BOY races, my club has 3 and we're one of the smallest, but do a good job of race management, so we get a good number of entries. Trying to start a new regatta might involve a club giving up a race date, probably won't happen. Area III started the St. Joe to Chicago race a couple of years ago because the racers were complaining about having to spend the entire Labor Day weekend away from their families, etc. So the boats race to St. Joe on Friday, party at the St. Joe River YC, (nice place!), Saturday, and race back to Chicago on Sunday. The rest of the fleet races to Michigan City on Sunday, parties again there Sunday, music, food, etc., and races back to Chicago on Monday. Giving more options helps. The different races are run by different clubs, but we all work together. LMSRF collects the entry fees, and each club receives the lions share of their race entry fee, so more boats equal more money, but we end up using it to upgrade our equipment, train our people, etc. But it does allow us to operate our RC without being a drain on our members. As a past commodore I can tell you that's important! Hope this helps, David From: "pw… [at] aol.com" <pw… [at] aol.com> To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com Sent: Tuesday, September 3, 2013 7:48 AM Subject: Re: [Cal_Boats] Tri_State Regatta David - So I guess you sail to all the locations as well to do the starts etc (ie: party)?
