Brad, definitely sounds like an ambitious and thorough project. Just make sure that she is blocked high enough for you to remove the rudder.
Best of Luck

Hello to All,
I am going to post updates on my project as time rolls along based on my guess that one or more of you will be interested in how parts of it go.
The haul-out and transport is scheduled for September 23rd, and I am preparing for the boat's arrival at our farm in Alabama. My plan is:
* Haul two to three tons of rock to the project site (a ton is 3/4 of a yard)
* Tamp the rock down in an area 9' X 9'
* Haul used railroad ties to the site, and place them centered on the 9' X 9' area and parallel to how the boat will sit
* Cut one railroad tie to two foot lengths and place two or three of those centered and perpendicular to the others to support the keel
I ordered boat stands from the marina that will haul-out the boat. Those should fit nicely on the railroad tie "platform".
The boat will stand approximately 16" above ground level, but only about 8" above the platform. The platform should remain solid and at the same level through the end of the project.
After the boat is in place I plan to build a scaffold around the cockpit at the same height of the gunwales. I will make that wide enough to include weather-proof enclosures for tools and parts, and will run underground electric connections in conduit from our nearby power pole so that I will have plenty of receptacles for power tools, lighting, and perhaps some fans and a heater when needed.
I will post photos when I have some.

Yeah, I just noticed, Rudder rhymes with udder. Either it's because I read about the new, totally robotic milking machines, in which cows milk themselves and the farmer need only monitor the activity via his smart phone, or, I've gone totally bonkers. It was on Gizmag (sorta like a near daily dose of Popular Science Magazine) earlier this week; I haven't got me crew, who grew up on a 120 head Holstein dairy farm in upstate N.Y., to read it yet. But I've never seen a sailboat with an udder....yet.
And, now to something sailing related. Today, I shall attempt to get my 4 horse Suzuki O.B. to pee in preparation to a voyage to Catalina (Puma Island) with a cruise novice gal single handing a Ranger 23 in trail. I'd like to go to Little Harbor, anyone stay there? Some sources say it's real safe, others say, the winds can turn on you suddenly. This being September, there's always a chance of a Santana condition, but it's a little early for that. Also, anyone sure of the date for the Buck an Ear weekend?
Jerry

We chartered a boat to little harbor last summer, and it was very mild. The main protection is that it is out of the swells. Even if the wind does turn, I think it is protected enough that you won't notice it.
