Play Mate (Cal 29) Refurbishing Project
Brad2013-09-05 12:15
Hello to All,
I am going to post updates on my project as time rolls along based on my
guess that one or more of you will be interested in how parts of it go.
The haul-out and transport is scheduled for September 23rd, and I am
preparing for the boat's arrival at our farm in Alabama. My plan is:
* Haul two to three tons of rock to the project site (a ton is 3/4 of
a yard)
* Tamp the rock down in an area 9' X 9'
* Haul used railroad ties to the site, and place them centered on the
9' X 9' area and parallel to how the boat will sit
* Cut one railroad tie to two foot lengths and place two or three of
those centered and perpendicular to the others to support the keel
I ordered boat stands from the marina that will haul-out the boat.
Those should fit nicely on the railroad tie "platform".
The boat will stand approximately 16" above ground level, but only about
8" above the platform. The platform should remain solid and at the same
level through the end of the project.
After the boat is in place I plan to build a scaffold around the cockpit
at the same height of the gunwales. I will make that wide enough to
include weather-proof enclosures for tools and parts, and will run
underground electric connections in conduit from our nearby power pole
so that I will have plenty of receptacles for power tools, lighting, and
perhaps some fans and a heater when needed.
I will post photos when I have some.

i understand the materials for your work area, compacting the drain rock, etc. also that you should give yourself room to get a sander in your hand under the foot. and a height to give yourself the rudder removal. you can figure that out by putting a straight board across the cockpit and calculating the distance to the post height, then from the board to the bottom of the hull where it exits at the top of the rudder. the rudder and this measurement should add up to the height above ground to the hull shaft tube. It actually will come out at an angle, reducing that distance a little. you could also not compact that area and trench if need be. we hauled on a hot summer and the boat stands, tripods of heavy pipe, began poking holes(sinking) into the asphalt. I recommend if you're using this type that you make some flat shapes like a square of thick plywood(like 1 1/2 inch subfloor) to spread out the pressure on the rock surface. .you could check for voids,
also penetrating epoxy if it will be a damp area. the wood under the foot(keel) that boatyards use is usually a very high quality. the home depot treated lumber would crumble. things to sit on of different heights are useful to have handy.be sure to use a leash on each ladder to the top rail so they don't blow off or slide. and bottom paints love your hair, so always use a hat..something will always make you stand up. paper painting suits are great, masks, goggles, the right gloves.
good luck, keep the hatches closed when sanding.Helen

Having recored the deck and replaced all bulkheads, floorboards and cabinets in my 29 let me say a 3m full face respirator is your best friend and even w that, pull a lot of air through the boat if using a grinder. If grinding and pulling air, realize fiberglass dust can float an easy 100 feet away. I had a fan on my forward hatch that would send it straight up and then it floated w the wind.
Look forward to seeing pictures. Enjoy, have fun, be safe, protect your lungs. :)

Sailboat Racing

Racing was a tad disappointing on Saturday. We were supposed to have a 12 nm coastal "Commodore's Cup". After almost two hours of postponements due to lack of wind, we ended up with a 2 nm race to and from the inlet buoy. Oh well, the weather was defnintely pretty, with a bit of an overcast, and we got to fly (or try to) our spinnaker.

Hello to All,
The boat is due to arrive late on Monday, and things here are ready.

I put down two tons of #57 gravel and leveled it off and packed it down
using a vibratory plate compactor. I placed fifteen railroad cross ties
on top of the gravel bed and then my son-in-law cut three eighteen inch
lengths from another cross tie to use as dunnage below the keel. I
finished it off with loose gravel approaches for the truck and trailer
to use on both ends of the platform.
It should be an easy matter to place the boat on this platform, and I am
pretty sure the platform will remain stable as long as we don't have any
earthquakes here!
Will post more photos when the boat is in place.

Brad, you could leave the boat there and have the location be a museum. That is a real effort.
Don't forget the chains between the jack stands.
Best of Luck

wow, looks pretty solid..did you allow for the single stand that usually goes up under the bow or do you think maybe it's not necessary? good plan for the rudder trough there.when you start the paint removal, you can lay down some visqueen to help roll up and dispose of mess. are you going to use liquid stripper or sanding technique? helen

I have seen some boat yards use the filter fabric like landscape cloth to prevent weed growth around the boats when removing bottom paint.
You can capture the dust, chips and debris and still allow rain to saturate through without have a slick wet surface.

Just clean up every day you scrape and use a good sander-vac and visqueen
would be just fine. Personally I would not want rain and wind putting
bottom paint chips all over my property. That stuff is nasty.

1972 Cal T2 - Convert to internal halyards?
Craig Johnson2013-09-22 01:57 UTC
Hello All,
I'd like your opinions. I have a 1972 Cal T2, which has the typical "Tree Trunk" mast used by Cal at the time. Currently all the halyards are external. Due the different design of the T2, the halyards go through Cheek type turning blocks about two feet above the deck to travel aft a few feet in the air before they go through a deck organizer on the cabin top (the cabin top does not go all the way to the mast on a T2, it's more like they glassed in the Pop Top on a Cal 25 in the Up position). Anyway, one of these cheek type turning blocks has exploded and I've been looking for some type of replacement.
I've been asking some of the old timers at the club their thoughts and one of them has suggested I convert to internal halyards and has offered hardware. I have never seen the masthead of this boat. Assuming that the masthead is something similar to a Catalina 27 and it could be done, are there any reasons I should not convert to internal halyards? I realize that exits will have to be cut in lower portion of the mast ( upper portion as well if I decide to more the spinn internal). I know the mast is beefy but I don't want to cause any future issues.
Thanks,
Craig Johnson

Only reason I can think of is cost and time. Making the halyards internal cleans things up a bit. It is probably best done w the mast down. Make sure your exits aren't near the gooseneck fitting(because it can be a high load area) and space exits out so they are not side by side. Your biggest issue once everything is done and you are ready to run the halyards is preventing an internal wrap between adjacent halyards. Wraps can be hard to find and fix w mast up, can cause premature halyard wear and can add significant friction. They are hard to find when at the dock because it often requires both lines to be loaded to feel it. Feeding a line down from the top of the mast w the mast up will almost certainly get you wraps between halyards.
