Jerry,
Keep a close eye on the brown inversion layer against Catalina during the morning/daytime before you leave. Sometimes you will have to motor over and in my experience late evening 11:00PM'ish a mild NE breeze will begin to flow directly into the North side of the island including Isthmus and Avalon Harbor. One exception is Big Fisherman's Cove USC Base is the only real protection and well worth ducking into as a last resort during severe Santa Ana's. Otherwise do plan on the backside in Santa Ana's, they can be disastrous with little warning. If the NE is building you will get waves breaking on shore and you will be asked by Harbor Patrol to relocate out to the deepest moorings. They will also warn that you may have to leave at a moments notice at any time during the night. Been there done that!

Hi maties.
I'm planning on making it to Catalina (Puma Island) this weekend. I'm hoping to stay over Sat evening at Cat harbor, where I'll anchor, then go to Little Harbor on Sunday.
They- the Catalina Island administration-, want $30 admission to this event. Is that something new, do you really have to pay this to participate, or will there be pirates, wenches, and parties a-plenty all over the Island?
They're also predicting a Santana condition later in the week. I was afraid of that, but hopefully it won't be too severe, and the bottom side of Puma Island should be mostly protected, except for the vicious down drafts I've experienced in the past. It's supposed to subside by the weekend, but one can never predict the weather that accurately. The Northwest is experiencing the first storm of the Fall/Winter season.

Santa Annas can put every boat in the Istmas on the beach. I would avoid
them. 40MPH winds and large waves. Not fun.

Jerry,
Out Patient is planning on being there. Weather permitting.
I saw the 30 .00. Thats new. I thought it was for a place to hide and relax. I will have to look into it more. Especially since it is a 60 mile trip for me.

For those of you going to Santa Catalina island this weekend, there are WIND ADVISORIES from Malibu to Los Angeles Counties and COASTAL WATERS. POTENTIALLY HIGH WINDS FROM THE NORTH EAST. Monitor your marine radio and if possible, go to the backside (Catalina Harbor) just to be safe.

Allan,
It's confusing. The NOAA website I refer to indicates benign conditions in that area and betwwn MdR and Catalina, but possible Gale conditions up torwards Pt. Magu and the like. It was very windy this morning in the 'Valley' but calm and peaceful on the other side of the Santa Monica Mountains, and when I got to the Marina this late afternoon to wash down me boat, there was even a gentle on shore breeze.

Out Patient stayed home. We planned to do the 12 hr run last night. Even though it looked like a nice warm reach under the stars. I did not want to get hammered with 35 knot winds on a mooring.
This morning was beautiful. I was watching the stars, no twinkle. Car had dew on windows. Got to work still no twinkle. Walked outside around 8 am. Nothing. However you could see the dirt in air. Walked out a little later, then you could smell the dirt in the air. Little while later, my building shook and it was blowing 32 mph. I kept watching NOAA and Catalina was pnly 4 knots. Point Mugu was blowing 27-32 all day. I hope I made the right decission.
I guess tomorrow will tell.

Santa Ana's blew hard all night on the San Pedro Coastline. The wind was completely filled in from the cliffs this morning up to the island. I am going out to the point now and should have more feedback. Hope those who went had a safe trip. It appears that they may be in for another night of it.

Allen, I heard from folks at the Isthmus that the winds Saturday morning were so fierce...over 40 knots...that the cattle boats couldn't land their cargoes of Buccaneer wannabees. Our crossing was so flat and nearly windless that we had to motor the whole way. I guess maybe that's safer than getting creamed by THAT much wind, but half or a third of it would have been nice.
The trip back Monday made up for it, tho.
