Exhaust Leak
bs… [at] yahoo.com2013-10-10 23:40 UTC
Hi all, I was out motoring along the other day and noticed a small exhaust leak. When we started the engine back up to come in it got a lot louder. I found a hole in the exhaust manifold about the size of a large BB. The engine is an A30 Farymann (1976). Does anyone know if there was a zinc or some type of plug that is supposed to go in there or can I just have it welded closed?

A generic answer not specific to your engine. Tap the manifold lightly
with a hammer.
a) It breaks -- buy a new one
b) it is solid -- drill out the hole, tap it, and screw in a plug.
1) above breaks the manifold -- go to a)
2) above doesn't break anything -- you are exceedingly lucky. Go have a
scotch to celebrate.
:-)

I would bet the exhaust manifold has rusted out. I had this problem on My R-30. If your going to try welding be sure to find a really good welder. The casting is poor and you will have to grind back to find something good to weld to. I tried to weld mine. The whole water jacket was paper thin. Good luck

Thanks for the advice everyone! I am going to remove the manifold this week and see what it looks like. Crossing my fingers it will be repaired with an easy fix

Use nickel rod. Expensive, but works best when welding cast iron. If
welding a crack, grind a V down the crack, drill holes at each end and
weld. You can pre-heat the metal or weld cold.If welding cold, weld very
short bits of bead (1"), not letting things heat too much and peen the weld
with a hammer after each bead to help stress relieve and prevent cracking.
Or preheat the piece to like 600 degrees and weld away, then peen the weld.
Then bury the piece in sand so that it cools very slowly, to hopefully
prevent cracking. Just about every piece of my old Caterpillar crawlers are
cast iron, so I've experimented with different cast weld methods over the
years.
