RE: [Cal_Boats] value (Janet)
Hi, Janet. How is the Big Easy treating you?
I think the lack of CAL 25s on NADA is based on the thought/fact that the boats are not going into brokerage because they are too inexpensive/cheap for brokers to deal with,. I managed to have a hand in the sale of 4 CAL 25s in the past year, but I only know the final price of two.
Here is my shakedown on the price of a CAL 25.
Hull - Zero (unless immaculate interior with upgrades/beauty - $1K – this one would attract cruisers)
Working engine - $500 (Recent engine – up to $1K)
Sails - $0 to $500 (recent set of racing sails 1, 2, main, spin - $2K)
Good recent bottom - $500
Winch upgrades - $300 – $500 depending on what
Good cushions - $500
Electronics - $?K (don’t know of many CAL 25s that are tricked out this way)
Paint job – probably not meaningful unless it pleases a cruiser (goes into hull value)
New windows/ports – up to $500
Comes out to be approximately $0 for a boat with no redeeming characteristics, and up to $6K for a fully tricked out boat set for racing capability. Nominal cost for a decent boat is about $2K, maybe $2.5K. I won’t list everything I did to a boat that I sold for $4500 (unless you ask). We know that these boats are investments without return other than pleasure.
Just my 2 cents
Cheers
Charlie

Reggie, there is a a NADA guide (and maybe others)
http://www.boats.com/boat-content/nada-guides/
I just looked up a CAL Cruising 36 on NADA. The prices apparently do not account for substantial improvements such as new engines, new sails and the like. Max retail about $25, and average price in the teens.
Take Care

What was the surveyors results. Did he do a market analysis?
The Cruising Cal 36 only had a limited run so it is hard to say. They have listed for 15-30k. some more some less.

market value for our old CALs is always seems too low for the owner and too high for the prospective buyer, and hard to determine for insurance purposes. Can anyone help me find actual recent sales figures on 1970ish CAL 36's or other CALs even closely comparable?
