new stream of cleaning diesel fuel and tank
Helen Horn2013-10-16 19:58 UTC
How much fuel is in your tank..if it's a large amount, there are mobile fuel polishing businesses around anywhere there are fishing communities. If it's a small amount, pump it into a yellow (diesel container) and properly dispose of it. Your county dump may know the facility for that. Then if you have a cleanout fitting (you can have them on diesel but not gasoline tanks) you can inspect and finish cleaning it out. If you search google you can probably find exact how-to's. Plus I've read articles on how to install cleanout fittings, so I'm sure you'll find that also. Helen

If you are on the Chesapeake call me as that is what I do. Runs in the $275 to $375 area depending on how far away you are and how dirty the tank is. This is the machine I use and I go in through the sending unit generally http://catalog.rcitechnologies.com/item/portable-tank-cleaning-unit/-tank-cleaning-unit/ptcu-2?
Good luck!

Thanks for all the info. Paul I keep my boat at the Miles River YC in St. Michaels MD. Is it better to do it in the spring as apposed to the fall during winterization. Plan to keep the boat in the water this winter.

Ahhh okay I've done a couple boats over there, both powerboats though.
If you are not going to use it all winter then fill it up and let it sit all winter to help soften up the crap on the walls, That way when I come in in the spring, it'll all be looser and ready to come out. About a month before you want me to come out, put an injector cleaner in the tank. I like Sea Foam found at Napa and Walmart. Don't put it in while winterizing because I don't want to take the chance of everything falling off the walls and then settling hard on the bottom again before I get there.

Atomic 4 engine noise
Greg Beron2013-10-16 22:48 UTC
The engine in my Cal 29 started making a rattling/knocking noise today. It ran flawlessly for a few hours on Sunday as I motored around the marina with some out-of-town friends. It seems to be coming from the flywheel housing, but who knows? I recorded it and uploaded to Youtube: http://youtu.be/TX_8Bcxc3QQ
Any ideas?

Sounds like knocking or an exhaust leak to me but it is really hard to tell
from a recording. You should take the flywheel cover off it you think it
is coming from there. I would love to know what you find so please post the
results.
Reminds me of when I was a kid and had a clicking sound in my Austin Healey
engine. I want to my friendly mechanic and ask him what it was. He said
"The nut on the end of your camshaft is loose". He was right. I asked him
how he knew and he said he had heard the sound for months and had been
trying to figure out what it was. He knew I would have tried adjusting the
valves so it couldn't be that and ultimately the camshaft nut was the only
thing it could be. He was very helpful to me over the years. Obviously I
had a lot of faith in him as it isn't easy to get at that nut and I just
went and tore the engine apart based on his comment.

Is this engine directly bolted to the engine bed stringers, or does it
sit on flexible rubber mounts?

Check the mounts for a collapsed condition, [ if they are over 8 years
old or oil soaked, they are suspect ] and also check all mount
fasteners for security.

Thanks. I'll check them thoroughly, but there's no visible sign of collapse or oil on them. They're white, so that would show up.

Could be one of the bolts holding the motor mounts down to the bed or to the engine is slightly loose.
How is the air cleaner/filter attached? Could it just be loose and rattling?
Just start touching stuff while it's running and see if the sound changes. Find a solid spot to lean on the engine as well and see if that changes the pitch of the noise. If nothing changes it could be internal though it doesn't sound like it.
I assume there has been no change to the exhaust color, oil pressure, water temp or overall power, correct?
Good luck -

How much fuel is in your tank..if it's a large amount, there are mobile fuel polishing businesses around anywhere there are fishing communities. If it's a small amount, pump it into a yellow (diesel container) and properly dispose of it. Your county dump may know the facility for that. Then if you have a cleanout fitting (you can have them on diesel but not gasoline tanks) you can inspect and finish cleaning it out. If you search google you can probably find exact how-to's. Plus I've read articles on how to install cleanout fittings, so I'm sure you'll find that also. Helen

Thanks for all the info. Paul I keep my boat at the Miles River YC in St. Michaels MD. Is it better to do it in the spring as apposed to the fall during winterization. Plan to keep the boat in the water this winter.

Good luck!

Helen

Do you have good oil pressure? Might try pulling one plug wire at a time to see if noise changes. Does putting it in gear fwd/reverse change the noise? Could something have gotten between the engine and the hull?

How is the air cleaner/filter attached? Could it just be loose and rattling?
Just start touching stuff while it's running and see if the sound changes. Find a solid spot to lean on the engine as well and see if that changes the pitch of the noise. If nothing changes it could be internal though it doesn't sound like it.
I assume there has been no change to the exhaust color, oil pressure, water temp or overall power, correct?
Good luck -

Thanks. I'll check them thoroughly, but there's no visible sign of collapse or oil on them. They're white, so that would show up.

You know, my engine, that was definitely running on 3 cylinders, sounded a
lot like that. Try removing the plug wires one at a time and watch the
RPM. It should drop just a bit on each wire. Any cylinder that does not
drop is likely not firing. Pull the plug and see what it looks like
compared to the others and look for stuck valves, which is the issue I have.

Ahhh okay I've done a couple boats o.er there, both powerboats though.
What model is your boat again?
Thanks -

Paul I sent you an email at the email address shown below, but will follow up with this one.
Paul, Spring is fast approaching, however looking out my window you'd never know it. We corresponded before through the Cal site and you informed me that you had a machine that would clean my diesel tank. I think you said you lived in Salisbury. My boat is a 1987 Cal 33-2 and is kept at the Miles River YC in St Michaels MD. You also indicted that I needed to put injector cleaner in the tank about a month before you came which I will do once we set up a time. Can you still preform this service for me and if so can we set up a date. I'ed like to get this done some time in April. I start racing the boat in May. Salisbury is about 60 to 65 miles from St. Michaels. I have only owned the boat for two years but don't think the tank has been cleaned for some time.
Thanking you in advance,
