Headliner
se… [at] natspin.com2014-03-21 23:04 UTC
I am closing on a 1986 Cal 33-2 tomorrow, wife and I are both excited. The PO removed the headliner and the replacement is one of my first projects. I would like to get any suggestions on the best way to do this. If you have completed this project do you have pics of the finished project?

I think I would forget the headliner finish the underside of the deck off nice .Much easer to see any water intrusion

I took a hybrid approach - Pulled out the headliner, sanded everything down and painted with mold resistant paint, then made a modular, easily removable headliner from treated beadboard.
I've attached a picture.

I dislike headliners. The Cal 34 I sailed for years and the Cal 40 I have do not have headliners and I'm grateful for that.
Some fun times with headliners
A friend wanted to screw something into the overhead, not only did she find wires the PO had run, but she found that the wires were not de-energized by the master switch which she had turned off for the project.
All three club boats of a club I belong to have liners. All three boats leak in the rain. No one has been able to follow where the water originally comes from.
The club boats look classy where the headliner dishes in from the backing plate for hardware installed over time.

If your wife is like mine a quick coat of paint isn't going to do it.
If water is leaking into your boat you might want to think about fixing that first. There aren't that many places that water is going to leak inside; it's usually going to be at the mast, deck fixtures/fittings, or at the windows (not including chain plates because they don't impact the headliner). If either of the first two you'll want it fixed first so water doesn't soak into and start delaminating your deck core. If your windows leak you can fix that when you replace the headliner.
We replaced the headliner in our 2-29 about 8 years ago and haven't had any issues. This first pic is a "before" shot. You can see the material sagging around the windows, and see the "seams" for the original four overhead panels. https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/Cal_Boats/photos/albums/2056938998/lightbox/180820681 https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/Cal_Boats/photos/albums/2056938998/lightbox/180820681
This next pic shows the new headliner in three panels. Those white stripes are rope lights that are recessed into the headliner. https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/Cal_Boats/photos/albums/2056938998/lightbox/450068561 https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/Cal_Boats/photos/albums/2056938998/lightbox/450068561
We pulled the old headliner and material around the windows. The only areas that really needed any attention was around the windows where they'd been leaking. The material on the sides is glued down using a spray adhesive, and runs up the side to where the original headliner "clips" were. While the windows were out we replaced them with smoked tempered glass from Mark Heacox at Mark Plastics, who provided us with the proper sealer for the windows. In the eight years since we put them in we haven't had a leak yet.
The outer top panels have the material at the outside of the panel wrapped under battens made of 3/8" ply that are screwed to the cabin top and then stretched to the center and attached to more battens that were also screwed to the cabin top. Here we used teak molding as a crown and a cover for the staples that hold the material to the batten and the screws that hold the batten to the cabin top. If I ever need to access deck hardware or get up under the headliner all I have to do is remove the crown and unscrew the batten and that whole panel drops down. The center panel was installed the same way, with the port side wrapped under the batten, the batten attached, and then pulled to the starboard side where it's screwed down and crowned. I chose fastening it on the starboard side because there's room to work and no table to climb over or remove.
If I can answer any questions don't hesitate to ask....

I replaced the forward panel of the Headliner on my 1987 Cal 33-2. It was much easier than I thought it would be. I had read that the dorados on Cals were never well glassed and I found this to be true on my boat. I therefore glassed both port and starboard dorados before cutting a new Masonite panel. I used the old warped and degraded panel as a pattern. If you do not have this I suggest a 4x8 sheet of corrugated cardboard
to create a pattern.
The panels are held in place by the hand holds both sides and the 1 1/2 ish strips that cross the cabin top which screw into wooden blocks that have been glued to the underside of the overhead.
Good luck on a project that I had put off for a long time and found to be rather easy and very satisfying once I got the nerve to start on it.

Hello Seafish,
When I bought Magic, the headliner was factory vinyl and was falling down in places. We replaced it with a fabric material some refer to as "monkey fur" held in place using 3M adhesive spray. It's now about 10 years old, and I have had to dig into it a couple of times for cabin deck hardware, but all in all it has worked quite well. Attached is a photo.

Michael,
Thank you for your reply, I think I am going to try FRP panels.
I am looking for ideas on improvements, have you completed any projects that you recommend. Also do you have any pics of you boat interior and exterior that you would share.
Steve

I did purchase the 1986 Cal 33-2, just finished installing a new headliner. Project turned out very well.
