Hi Friends and Best of Spring Sailing, I would appreciate advice/suggestions on where/how I might find cabinet door hinges (they are rather peculiar) or equivalent replacements for a 1980 Cal-39. Thanks & Fair Winds, Bill

Suncor makes a stainless version but they are very pricey. Brass or steel ones can be purchased at a good hardware store. > On Mar 30, 2014, at 3:14 PM, bill plywaski <se… [at] yahoo.com> wrote: > > Hi Friends and Best of Spring Sailing, > > I would appreciate advice/suggestions on where/how I might find cabinet door hinges (they are rather peculiar) or equivalent replacements for a 1980 Cal-39. > > Thanks & Fair Winds, > > Bill >

I have been hunting for "Cal" hinges for a decade. No bananas. Right now I have four sets of knife hinges that approximate the originals. It requires modification to the cabinet door cut out slot. During installation, I rub them down with Lanocote to help prevent corrosion. Living in a salt water environment doesn't help. Here are the hinges I ended up with. They are as close as I could find to the original "Cal" style hinges. Variable Overlay Pivot Hinge - Pivot Hinges for Cabinets | HardwareSource.com Variable Overlay Pivot Hinge - Pivot Hinges for Cabinets... Most of the products that we stock, are not available in retail stores. Because of this, the products are not packaged for retail end users and instructions are not... View on www.hardwaresource... Preview by Yahoo I contacted one of the companies about making a run in SS or brass. I was told they only tool up for 5000 sets at a time. You could make two or have a machinist do it. Brass isn't that hard to machine. Stainless would be difficult. It would only take a bench vice, a hammer, a drill, and a bench grinder. You could not make 5000 that way, but you only need two. Allen On Mon, Mar 31, 2014 at 6:02 AM, Michael D <md… [at] yahoo.com> wrote: > > > Here are the hinges I ended up with. Bill, I bought some of these and installed them on the undersink head cabinets on my 1978 Cal2-39. http://www.hardwaresource.com/hinges/CABINET+HINGES/Pivot+Hinges+for+Cabinets/Semi-Concealed+Pivot+Hinge They are a pretty close replacement. Only required new screw holes and some minor lengthening of the slot for the hinge. Duane, I think I like the hinges you got more than the ones I ended up with. I see that both styles are steel based, so neither are ideal. Even the brass ones you get at most hardware stores are steel. Brass is a color. The best example of a what I thought was a metal being a color was a bronze wire brush I bought at Lowes. I bought it to clean the surface of my engine block and was happy to buy the bronze one so I would not scratch the soft cast iron. Well, bronze was a color and a magnet stuck fast to the wires. I would bet dollars to donuts that any brass hinge you get at Home Depot is not brass, just brass plated steel. Like I said, to these guys brass and bronze are colors. Even on tools that are not in any stretch of any useful purpose something you would care what color it was. Be careful.
