3 Cal 40's in Newport to Bermuda Race
pw… [at] aol.com2014-04-03 01:46 UTC
Just looked at the list of entrants in the 2014 Newport to Bermuda race and 3 Cal 40's are in it, 2 of them from the Tred Avon Yacht Club,
Flyer which was just completely re-done and finished up last Spring and Nicole which was re-fit with a wheel. Surprisingly Sinn Fein, which was totaled in Hurricane Sandy, has been re-built and will be racing as well. Here is a short little article on her.

No, but hope to in the next 4 or 5 years. Want to do the Annapolis to Newport race for a tune up first. I may do the Annapolis to Bermuda race instead as a friend of mine who owns the Cal 40 Bell Aurore, said it takes a team of lawyers to enter the Newport to Bermuda race. There is a level of offshore experience required to be captain which he did not meet even though he had quite a bit of offshore experience and had been sailing on the Bay his whole life (he's in his late 30's) so he had to have one of his friends register as captain of his boat. He said the application was ridiculous plus you have to have your boat measured and weighed etc. The Annapolis races aren't that ridiculous so I'm told.

Greets all,,
Great article on Sinn Fein! Also the prvious thread about the Cal 40 was heart warming! It is great to see the legacy of Cal boats living on. Sinn Fein is a true through bred! Hope you all do well in the race!
Just a great testament to "Good Ole Boats"!
Happy sailing!

I had the same thought. The Cal 40 is one of those classic "good
boats." (I think my Cal 20 is, too). Then think of all those IOR boats
with weird shapes and weirder behavior that nobody would call clasics,
except maybe classic folly. Or some of those 1970s vessels that were
built so strictly to a price that they are not worth working on. As
with so many human products, some are designed to function well and
reliably. Others are designed to look good or to sell to suckers.
With boats, more than with houses or cars, the traditional emphasis has
been on safe, efficient function. The water is not our native
environment so those things matter. The Cal 40 is in that fine tradition
of boat design and construction for which function is the primary focus.

You speak of Doug J. Know him well as crewed many times with him on the log canoe Island Bird and raced against him on Big T ime a Cal 33. Belle Aurora is a beautiful Cal 40. Never have sailed on her. My Cal is too small to even think of a Bermuda race, although my kids talk about it. You aught to think about the Annapolis to Miles River Race in late May. We had 120 boats last year but with 25 to 30 knots NW winds some of then drooped out. We finished 8th out of 15 and ended up the the best corrected time within the Miles River boats. Looking forward to meeting you on he 18th.
