RE: [Cal_Boats] Stained mainsail
Joe, neither oxygen bleach (Oxyclean) no chlorine bleach (e.g., Clorox cleaner and bleach should hurt the sail. Both come in sprays. The Oxyclean is good for organics (great for getting wine stains off a shirt), but does not work well on other “crap”. Try the Clorox spray on a spot and see what happens.
Just 2 cents, but with some experience

Subject: [External] [Cal_Boats] Stained mainsail
One of the two mainsails I got when I purchased my 1969 Cal 28 flush deck has mold and mildew stains (and possibly a rust stain or two). I cleaned it up this evening with Starbrite Sail and Canvas Cleaner. It didn't remove all the green and blackish mold stains even when I used it full strength. I keep a bottle of environmental friendly Simple Green on the boat and decided to try that. It worked about as well as the Starbrite. The sail is nice and clean now and most of the spots are lighter but still there. Is it safe to use products like Oxyclean? Is there another cleaner that would do it? I have another mainsail but this one is the actual Cal sail with the number on it and I'd like to spiff it up and keep using it. Structure wise, it's in excellent shape. A couple of loose stitches but only a couple on the whole sail. What will make it shine again and is safe to use? Thanks.
