I have not received a digest in 5 days. The Yahoo Message History show no posts to this list since April 8. Is everybody out sailing? -- Life is Good! Pat

Sailing? Been there, done that and really miss it. Too much work at 3/4''s of a Century old, but I have 6 A-4's, 13 diesels, 11 BW Velvet drives, water pumps and a stinkin' sail drive to fix, items on eBay, Craig's List and working on our Cal 46. We missed the "Blessing of the Fleet" today while I am trying to find a replacement gearbox for Johnny's boat. YUHKK Yanmars. Why don't we all go sailing? Well maybe fishing, but I can't even do that until I change the outboard on my panga. I am not complaining, as most people my age are resting in "Tombstone Orchard" pushing up daisies and we cruised for nine years. I just finished a 2 day J-world spinnaker class. First day in 1-5kts and today in probably 13-18 kts on a J-80. Instructor was very good but I don't feel like much of what I learned will translate to my 39. They were nice enough to do the class on a symmetrical chute although today we punched a hole in it and finished the day with an asymmetrical and I got to see what planning was like . . . not a lot of fun when you are the guy who has to hold the sheet as they don't allow you to put it on a winch! More later if anyone has any questions, gotta get my son in the tub. Good to see a message from Tom. And to see that you are up and around having a "good time," again. Do you have any recent sailing photos of your Cal 46 to share with the group? I didn't check the photos before responding to this message. But I will now.

Did you really mean you could not put the sheet in a winch or perhaps that you could not put it in a cleat? I don't allow crew to put the sheet in a cleat but would never consider no winch. Allen, I raced for years on an Erickson 35, trimmed the chute a lot, and you're right, never cleated the sheet, even on long distance races. It's always trim, trim, trim, and when in doubt, let it out. Races are won by efficient crews. Went out Saturday with a fellow marina mate, person 27, nice boat. Fouled another boat prestart and did a 720 and had a good windward leg, in light winds we suffered on the downwind leg trying to pole out a 150. At least we didn’t finish last. john From: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com [mailto:Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of Pat Finn Sent: Sunday, April 13, 2014 6:41 PM To: ca… [at] yahoogroups.com Subject: [Cal_Boats] Missing Posts I have not received a digest in 5 days. Had to hold the sheet the whole friggin' time with the asymmetrical and when flying the symmetrical had to hold both the pole and the sheet which was completely ridiculous in those winds. On our boat both the sheet and the guy are around winches and we generally cleat off the pole but have someone there to adjust as needed. The spin trimmer stands by the shrouds and depending on the weather may be tethered to a handrail. In light air they my forego the winch, in heavier air they use the winch but call back to a grinder while they put the pressure on the sheet. Pat, me not out sailing, but it be a grand, capital idea. Any Cals lurking in Marina del Rey? ANY kinda of boats at all bearing rags? We have a race up the main channel, round the detached breakwater and back to the starting line every Tuesday evening at 18 hours. Courtesy of md… [at] yahoogroups.com. One Papishky per race. Contact VMF race committee on Channel 71 and check in by 17:50 for check in. Jerry On Sunday, April 13, 2014 3:40 PM, Pat Finn <jf… [at] gmail.com> wrote: >I have not received a digest in 5 days. Happy Hour is in E basin in Marina del Rey, but she's having a new head and holding tanks installed right now. Also, I'm busy on Tuesdays. Oh, well. > On Apr 14, 2014, at 10:21 AM, Gerald Sobel <so… [at] yahoo.com> wrote: > > Pat, me not out sailing, but it be a grand, capital idea. > > Any Cals lurking in Marina del Rey?
