Just be smart. There's a Selden Mast Rigging guide that's googlable on the internet. It's 27 pages of illustrations and it covers most situations. A rookie mistake is to think that the spreader is "supposed to be" perpendicular to the mast. The uppers are actually canted up a bit so that the spreader bisects the angle that the upper makes when going round the spreader. In other words, the spreader to stay angle is equal for angle masthead-spreader tip-spreader base and angle spreader base-spreader tip-chainplate. George Barlow

I would think as small as a Cal 27 mast is, it would be easier and faster to drop it with a gin pole. haul it someplace and give it the attention it deserves. Just thinking! This is good advice, Randy. I dropped the mast on my 29 with the city's dock crane and 2 guys carried it to a flatbed truck and we drove it to my house (with a big red flag, of course.). I built a 2x4 a-frame to hold the front (padded) up over the cab and we tied the base down with moving blankets wrapped around it. The 2-27 mast is deck-stepped and 36 ft long. We stepped ours using another boat's rig as the crane. I dropped mine on my 29 by stepping a pole behind it. This video, I used a cal 20 mast as the lifting pole. I have built a box out of 2x6's and used that. With this method, I always put a support under the deck where the lifting pole is. The pole is secured at the base, secured to where the lowers attached and secured to the stern cleats and bow cleats. I use my mainsheet with a 4:1 to raise and lower the mast. It works fairly well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4mHCOHu2Dk East coast cal 29 sailor.
