Hello All, Question: What is wrong in the Garmin advertisement on page 31 of the May, 2014 issue of Cruising World? I showed it to my wife, and she had a great laugh. Michael s/v Magic, Cal 2-27 Pompano Beach, Florida Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android

Hah! Unless he's in the Southern Hemisphere, he may have his wraps on wrong. Would explain why he seems to be straining on what looks to be something about the size of a furling line. The Southern Hemisphere comment has nothing to do with physics or the spinning of the planet. I've been on several boats of Aussie or Kiwi build that had counter-rotating winches. That way the lead was the same from the block to the drum on both sides. Mirror image, as it were. My vote is that this saggy pantsed, ascot wearing boob with the gloves from Tractor Supply Co, has it on wrong... I have not seen the magazine but I did sail on an America's Cup boat and the winches on each side of the boat were mirror images so the line came in from the outside regardless of port or starboard and wrapped around in different directions accordingly. I've been on an Albin Vega that had CW and CCW winches. Only boat I've ever been on that had that. This reminded me of a different kind of advertising decades ago. I was at the Boat Show and saw an Ultimate 30 on display. This was a professional racing class, paid hands, and prize money. I looked at it awhile and said to the guy showing the boat, "I don't see any purchase on the spinnaker, how do you get it in." He pointed to the block mounted on the back of the boat and described how that gave 2:1, then pointed at another block mounted somewhat farther forward and said that made it 3:1, but since the line only went around 90 degrees it was more like 2.5:1. I explained to him that turning blocks mounted on the deck gave no advantage. He then said "That must be why it takes 3 of us to pull in the spinnaker sheet." These guys were getting paid to sail???? Humpf! It must be some kind of conspiracy. The Harken ad inside the back page (same issue) also has winches wrapped counter clockwise. Question: Are they ignorant or just clever marketeers? Michael Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android
