water in engine compartment

Does anyone who owns a Cal 33-2 have a solution for the following. My stuffing box drips appropriately but collects in the engine compartment causing it needing to be pumped out periodically. Jeep

Install drip free packing, and your problem is solved. *Joe DeMers - owner* Sound Marine Diesel LLC SoundMarineDiesel.com <http://www.soundmarinediesel.com/>*phone & fax (860) 666-2184* On 4/29/2014 6:56 AM, je… [at] comcast.net wrote: > > > Does anyone who owns a Cal 33-2 have a solution for the following. Jeep, A small drip in the stuffing box should not fill the engine bilge with water that wouldn’t evaporate in a few days. If you are motoring a lot you may have additional leaks that should require your attention. The cockpit scuppers, propane lockers, and exhaust exit above the waterline when sailing or in the slip. The thru-hulls were originally a Nylon material (not Marlon) and become brittle and may have cracked over time. When under power the Cal “squats” and event the exhaust flange may be under water. Leaks at all these areas, drain into the engine bilge. Or as Joe recommends, go with a “no Drip” system, or replace the packing material with the Teflon coated material. I own a 33-2. I notice the same thing, a good bit of water under the engine after a day of sailing and motoring around. When I was replacing my fresh water impeller last weekend (in prep for the coming season) I was looking over the pump and was wondering about how that shaft gets lubrication. Does it also drip? I must say I have never watched it while the engine was running, being the boat is new to me as of July last year, I was just checking the fluids, closing the hatch and starting it. I guess I should do some investigation with the Yanmar running and the engine compartment open. Leslie my water pump does not drip. The stuffing box is causing the problem. Don't want to tighten it too much as it needs water to lubricate it. I'm thinking of drilling a small hole from the engine compartment into the bilge so water will not collect in engine compartment . Still thinking it through. When I was replacing my fresh water impeller last weekend (in prep for the coming season) I was looking over the pump and was wondering about how that shaft gets lubrication. Most use permanently lubed bearings. The bearings come from the factory sealed with the grease inside. If you're talking about a raw water impeller pump that is flange mounted to the engine then there is a water and an oil seal and the bearings are lubricated by the engine oil. I'm thinking of drilling a small hole from the engine compartment into the bilge so water That compartment is also keeping any oil that drips off your engine from going into the bilge where it will be pumped overboard. Previous owners have drilled too many holes in my engine pan to seal it, but at least I put an oil absorber pad down to catch the oil. If I ever have a catastrophic oil leak it means cleaning all the oil out from the bilge (4' down) without pumping it overboard. I'd much rather it was contained at the engine. I have a Cal 33-2. There is always some water in the engine bilge, but the engine bilge was designed to be separated from the main bilge in order to keep any oil and/or fuel that may have leaked from contaminating the bilge and being pumped overboard. I have always just used a plastic pail that is squarish to remove most of the water and then a sponge to get the last bit. I also have kept a oil soaking cloth in there that I change about once a year. This was all explained to me when I purchased the boat new in February, 1986. As the engine cover hinges forward without the need for any tools, I have never found it to be a problem. However, I do think a dripless shaft seal would be a good idea! After all, I found this group because my transmission cable mount had rusted through from the water coming off the stuffing box and I was looking for a replacement part. Had to make it myself! don't know if youve tried to invent a special catch-trough that could run under dripping path with a half pipe of pvc, just like a gutter, then a tee that will channel that water to a lower outlet, even drilled through the sides of engine box to run to bilge without using it to wash your engine compartment into the bilge..it could be a tube that fits the hole(s) you drill so as to isolate it from the engine compartment. just an idea..Helen From: "je… [at] comcast.net" <je… [at] comcast.net> To: Cal Boats <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> Sent: Friday, May 2, 2014 4:35 AM Subject: Re: [Cal_Boats] water in engine compartment Leslie my water pump does not drip. Thanks for all the feedback on this. My water pump is mounted on a plate in front and below the engine, so it must have permanently lubricated bearings. We had a universal diesel on our other boat and it's fresh water pump was definitely lubed by grease in a grease 'cup' that I would screw in every so often so the shaft grease was replenished. I guess there are all sorts of ways to solve the lube problem. I might go for the drip less stuffing box as well.
