Hi, William. The “dreaded beam” was really based on the individual design of the boats, and the size of the boats. You do not have a metal beam for the 28 in the floor pan. My CAL 25 does not have a lower beam (deck stepped mast). My CAL 40 does have one. Boats that do and do not have them is kind of a mix. For the boats that do have the beam, the story I heard was that Lapworth specified stainless steel, and the builder used galvanized steel to cut cost. Dear Cal Sailboat Group: Does 1968 Cal 28 "Flat top" have the steel beam supporting the mast, or had Cal fixed the problem by 1968? I am going to look at a 1968 Cal 28 on Thursday April 8.
