RE: [Cal_Boats] Does 1968 Cal 28 "Flat top" have the steel beam supporting the mast?
Hi, William. The “dreaded beam” was really based on the individual design of the boats, and the size of the boats. You do not have a metal beam for the 28 in the floor pan.
My CAL 25 does not have a lower beam (deck stepped mast). My CAL 40 does have one. Boats that do and do not have them is kind of a mix.
For the boats that do have the beam, the story I heard was that Lapworth specified stainless steel, and the builder used galvanized steel to cut cost.

Subject: [External] [Cal_Boats] Does 1968 Cal 28 "Flat top" have the steel beam supporting the mast?
Dear Cal Sailboat Group:
Does 1968 Cal 28 "Flat top" have the steel beam supporting the mast, or had Cal fixed the problem by 1968? I am going to look at a 1968 Cal 28 on Thursday April 8.
Sincerely Yours:
William St. Clair
