Fuel tank removal question
Kool Beans2014-05-11 02:45 UTC
Greetings everyone,,
I am at the point of possibly removing the fuel tank from Kool Beans for inspection and possible repair.. Has anybody taken a tank out of a Cal 2-29? I also have my refrigeration unit in the port side of the tank. I was looking at it the other day and was wondering how to take it out.
How does the refrigeration unit come out? Does it have to come out in order to get the fuel tank out? Would it be better to use a scope with a light on it and check it out first? I have attached a photo of the fuel tank before the engine was taken out.
Again,,, thank you to all for any suggestions and advice!
Happy sailing and Happy Mothers Day to all sailing and non-sailing Moms!
Regards,,

Hi Jim,
We recently had a discussion of this. I had my tank out twice, once when I re-powered and once when I replaced it 3 years ago. It was a bit tight getting my 6' + frame in the back of the engine compartment to wrestle it out, but it is very doable. A refrigeration unit is not standard on a Cal 2-29 and mine is under the starboard quarter berth, so I cannot speak to that.
The original mild steel tanks are prone to corrosion down low where some salt water spray from the propeller shaft can sit and eat away at it.
