Crack happened last summer. Just discovered as I was sanding the bottom
to repaint a few days ago. I had done some repair work on the keel when I
first got the boat 6 yrs ago but the voids you see are not in my work. I am
headed over there tonight to start feathering back the divot I ground down
to find the bottom of the crack. I am also going to add more layers to
the interior as suggested by a friend of mine who's an expert in the boat
repair biz.

No, not bolted on and it has turned out to be a
BFD. Here are the
latest pics.
Started grinding down to get to the bottom of the crack
and was able to see
daylight in the cabin! Not good!
This is looking forward just aft of the mast
step. The green is light
coming thru where I ground out below.
This is looking to port under the shower pan.
Again the greenish area
is where the light is coming thru.
This is for reference. You can see the light in
the corner of where
the sole is pulled out.
This is the side view. I've got a lot more
grinding to do to feather
out the divot in the leading edge of the keel.
Not fun.

Paul,
Good luck with it. What a crappy way to start your summer, but I guess it's better to know now rather than when you are off shore. The next time we haul out I'm going to do some serious inspecting around that port.

Ugh ! I hate to bring it up but you might want to look at what they did to
Montgomery Street. The owners cut off the old keel, built a new structure
on the bottom and added a bolt on keel. After that, they won the Transpac
with the new configuration. The Cal 40 keel (and the Cal 39) was a new
innovation in 1963 but they get old. That was a big job but this looks
scary. Sinking scary.
You might want to contact Dave Denning and get the info on their job. They
did a lot of it themselves with a design from an architect.

Mike -
My boat is a 1980 so it's not "that old" but I hear ya. I spoke with a
friend who is an expert in this type of work and did the same thing you
mentioned to another boat.
He also sails on Belle Aurore the Cal 40 that won the last Newport to
Bermuda race (I think) and was consulted on the repair of Sein Finn after Sandy
hit. Anyway, when they did the Marblehead to Halifax race on Belle Aurore
they were taking on water from a crack behind the keel. When they got to
Halifax they "pinned" the boat up against the bulkhead (dont' ask me how)
and when the tide went out they inspected the crack, filled it with 5200 to
get them back to the states and then fixed it correctly.
My friend advised me to lay up more layers on the inside of the hull to add
more strength to that area which I will do.
Wish me luck.

It is nice to have friends like that. I am lucky to have one who knows the
L-36 well. His dad built them and he spent his youth hanging out in the
