Out Patient sailed in the Santa Barbara Sailing Club and Pierpont Bay Yacht Clubs first race of the island series. We sailed 47 miles from Santa Barbra to Anacapa island to port then back to Ventura.
We started in 4-6 knots of wind, 4 miles off shore we ran into light zyphers. We tacked away while the rest of the fleet sailed out. We caught the SW wind and was sailing towards Anacapa. As the wind backed we set the reacher. The wind built to 19 knts and a huge swell. The only boat that passed us was a J105. We doused the A3 and tried the A4, bad mistake, after round up after round up, we had to bear away and get rid of that. We got to a point where the wind lightened to 11 knots and we set the 3/4 oz S2, then all of a sudden the wind went to 27 knots and we were doing 10.4 on the hull. When we saw the J22 Majic Dragon wipe out and saw the keel come out of the water, we doused the chute. We were 4th boat to the island and the wind died. The rest of the boats came in high and sailed past us. After we made it around the west end and down the back side there was no wind, we all started over again. Then OP hit a hole and was stuck. We made it around Arch rock after 8pm. We hit the wind line with 20- 21 knots of wind, broad reaching the17 miles to Ventura. it was beautiful, the swell was breaking with phosphorus crests. The troughs were huge black holes, we would drop in and loose the the lights from shore. As we approached the harbor all the fleet was stuck at the entrance, the race started over again. RC finished 7 boats in 4 minutes. We ended up 4th in class and 4th over all. Thanks to crew, Rick Barrett, Stacy Petterson and George Fitch.
