For some reason I didn't see the original message. Out Patient sailed Wet Wednesday l ast night. It was what the name implies. Wet. We had 12-15 knots at the start with 4-6 ft seas rolling through. We had a good start. Little stressful but we pulled it off. The start line was heavily skewed to a port start. We choose to start on starboard. Lots of surprised folks yelling and screaming. We ran the line and hardened up when the gun went off. It was sweet. Still have a smile on my face and a slight chuckle. We went out far enough to keep the big boats from sailing over the top of us then tacked back. By the time we got to the weather mark. It built to 18-21. The A fleet has going around it. The wind shifted back to the W'SW. When they set the chutes lots of round ups. We went to school off of that and put up a reacher. The wind was back far enough to carry it and off we went with 7 to 9 knots of boat speed. . 1st place. Lots of people were talking about Out Patient last night. We even corrected out over the A fleet. Love it, when things work out in our favor. Randy CAL 2 29 OUT PATIENT Channel Islands, Ca. Out last night at our local beer can race. The wind died on our side of the course and we watched about half the fleet sail away. It was a beautiful night out on the water, however. We raced Papoose on Tuesday. We had a poor start, 27 seconds late due to starting down to the pin too early and running out of room. I had a parameter entered in my program left over from the Master Mariners race so it was expecting 5.1 kt reaching down the line instead of 7.6kt. Big difference. Anyway, we started on port as we had passed the starboard layline. We almost crossed the J-105 but decided to tack instead as it looked too close. We were 3rd boat at W and off downwind with our 90% jib against the C&C-41 and the J-105 both with spinnakers. The three boats rounded the next mark right in a row. We had an advantage because 1) we didn't round up and have to take a spinnaker down like the C&C41 and 2) We didn't sail into a wind hole and stop like the J-105. We put up a free flying 150 (60 years old) for the reach to the next mark and had some serious time put on us by the faster boats but not as much as we would have just leaving the 90 up. The wind was 90 apparent and we are not good enough with the spinnaker yet. In fact, we have not agreed as a crew on a take down method so can't fly it. The beat back to the finish line was interesting. What was interesting was that the CEO of RaceQs gave a talk and several of the boats, including the top 3 finishers, had tracks. Papoose did the last leg in 27 minutes and the J-105 did the last leg in 27.07 minutes. Both the C&C41 and the J-105 were faster the entire leg but Papoose sailed a significantly shorter distance. In fact, we sailed a shorter distance on every leg except the first, which was a tie. The CEO guy said that is why we win. We sail a tighter line. It was very cool to hear that. It was a 6 mile course and the J-105 finished 4 minutes ahead of us but owed us 7 minutes so we won the race by 3 minutes. We now have two thirds and two firsts with one more race and one toss out. If we win next week, we will at least tie the first series. I will start a thread on spinnaker take downs to get your all opinions.
