The first help anyone can give this fellow sailor is figuring out what was (is) wrong with the engine - why is the focus on replacement rather than repair? From previous posts it seems there was an investment made (a costly one at that) to replace the starter solonoid - so my assumption is there are (were) problems getting it started?
The same fellow that would charge you $500 for a simple solenoid replacement - a $40 item plus perhaps an hour labor to install - might indeed be suggesting that the engine is beyond repair and need$$$ replacement.
I am sure there are folks that are willing to step up and quiry as to wether this is indeed needed based on "symptoms" and could recommend less drastic measurements before ending at that conclusion?
I for one would like to know what is wrong with the engine and see if I could offer some advice towards less drastic measurements.

Paul -
I don't know the whole story but the boat is a 1970 model and he said he sunk $2,000 into the engine 2 yrs ago and didn't want to do that again only to have something else go up. Thanks for the response.

I agree with Paul and I am in the business of repairing good old diesels, like Perkins, plus selling new engines. I often will ask a customer:
1- where are you going?
2-how long are you going to keep this boat?
3- why do you feel you need a new engine?
4- who told you so?
True, there are some engines not worth repairing, parts too costly and poorly designed and/or built in socialist countries. While some of the new engines are good, don't expect to get 10,000 hours out of a high revving ______, maybe 2,500 if you are careful. Common sense will tell you an engine that cruises at 2,000 RPM's will last longer than one that cruises at 4,000.
Often a simple repair by a competent, honest technician can get you many more years of use. I suppose that is why we are booked up until September.
