Need a new prop

Brad Robinson2014-07-07 05:23 UTC
I have a 1976 cal-29 and I am looking for a new prop for more speed and better handling in reverse. It has a ferryman inboard Diesel engine with a small two bladed prop. Any suggestions? Thanks, Brad

My friend swears by his plastic prop. I am trying to find the brand for you. Please send the following for a prop sizing - 1] maximum engine horsepower at what? rpm [ as I recall, the Farymann A30 M is 10hp @ 2500 rpm ] 2] reduction gear ratio 3] Waterline length of the boat 4] maximum diameter prop that will fit your boat. *Joe DeMers - owner* Sound Marine Diesel LLC SoundMarineDiesel.com <http://www.soundmarinediesel.com/>*phone & fax (860) 666-2184* On 7/7/2014 1:34 AM, Allen Edwards al… [at] gmail.com [Cal_Boats] wrote: > > > My friend swears by his plastic prop. This is the brand my friend has. He paints it with bottom paint to eliminate growth. He recommends them highly. He went out sailing 125 times in one year a couple of years ago so they seem to hold up just fine. Personal, I use a folding prop but cannot recommend that if you want good performance in reverse. http://mysite.verizon.net/resqp86c/performancepropellers/index.html Allen On Mon, Jul 7, 2014 at 3:23 AM, Joe DeMers je… [at] mindspring.com [Cal_Boats] <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> wrote: > > > Please send the following for a prop sizing - > > 1] maximum engine horsepower at what? rpm [ as I recall, the Farymann A30 > M is 10hp @ 2500 rpm ] > > 2] reduction gear ratio > > 3] Waterline length of the boat > > 4] maximum diameter prop that will fit your boat. > > *Joe DeMers - owner* > > Sound Marine Diesel LLC > SoundMarineDiesel.com <http://www.soundmarinediesel.com/>*phone & fax > (860) 666-2184 <%28860%29%20666-2184>* > > > On 7/7/2014 1:34 AM, Allen Edwards al… [at] gmail.com [Cal_Boats] > wrote: > > My friend swears by his plastic prop. Hi Allen When looking for a prop some things to consider 2 blade fixed has less drag than 3 blade 2 blade less control in reverse till the boat gets moving also the prop walk in reverse can be more at first I have a martec folding prop for less drag when sailing not the best for motoring. Now the size of the prop Vic Prop in Canada has a online calculator that can helpfiul But one rule of props you want the engine to rev under load in forward to the rated RPM so if you have 3k has max rpm you want to get close to that this is very important or you can carbon up the engine and not use the rated HP of the engine. That's my 5cents I'm sure others can chime in also Scott cal 2-29 1975 On Tuesday, July 8, 2014 6:37 AM, "pw… [at] aol.com [Cal_Boats]" <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> wrote: Allen - Kiwi props are great Paul From: Allen Edwards al… [at] gmail.com [Cal_Boats] <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> To: Cal_Boats <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> Sent: Mon, Jul 7, 2014 1:35 am Subject: Re: [Cal_Boats] Need a new prop My friend swears by his plastic prop. Brad, How big is your existing prop? I have a friend looking for a smaller prop for his atomic 4. I had a 3 blade all plastic fixed prop on my 31 foot sloop. It was OK. I got a Kiwi Prop and improved both backing and speed under sail. The Kiwi Prop has all plastic blades and a Stainless Hub. I'm guessing I added 1/2 knot lunder sail with the self feathering prop. Search for Kiwi Prop. It is so simple-- blades free pivot on their shafts. In reverse the blades reverse also so you have effectively reversed the prop on its shaft. That is why it works so much better in reverse than other fixed blade plastic prop. If you get one, be to paint the blades with the proper bottom paint as the instructions advise. Greg S/V Evania

Just for the record, I am not the poster who needs a new prop. I have a Martec 14RH10 that I bought when I had my engine rebuilt. The old Martec that I had was a 7RH10 so this is quite a step up. I have never had the courage to rev the engine up to the point I find out how fast I can go. I can idle at the speed limit in the marina and then bring the revs up to 1200. This is significantly below the rated HP, which is 31 at 2200 RPM. But that is what the engine guy told me to rev. It is a Gray Marine gas engine.
