Good grief . . . if he were in Newport I'd refer to them as "people up
there" and I didn't say everyone is trying to rake him over the coals. I
don't know where he is exactly at this point so generalizations are all I have
at this point. Why don't you sign your name so I don't have to refer to
you as another person down there?

RE: [Cal_Boats] ICW Help Needed

Not sure I can help without additional information about your friends location. My experience is from the Neuse River area of the ICW. There are a few small boatyards and marinas in this area that will allow DIY work or outside contractors to work on boats in their yard.
Hurricane Marina/Boat yard is located in Bayboro NC (on the Bay River just off the ICW. My experience is they have the lowest haul and short term storage rates in this area. Their main purpose is a working boat (crab, shrimp etc) and the owner is a Cat Dealer Mechanic. I am certain they either have the experience or connections to local small marine diesel mechanics. There are a lot of sailboat/cruisers that use this yard as well.
Bock Marine is located midway between the Neuse River and Morehead section of the ICW “ditch”. We have not used this boat yard but seems to be full of boats, and allow outside contractors last time I checked.
In Oriental, there is Deaton’s and Sailcraft boat yards. Both do excellent work from reports from friends that have had work performed. They also may have some outside contractors that they could recommend if needed.
If your friend has Boat US, their tow service in oriental has had good feedback. With unlimited towing insurance, he may get towed to one of these yards for repairs.
There are several other boat yards closer to Morehead on the ICW. Hatteras Yachts is/was located in New Bern, so some yards tend to specialize on these and rates may be based accordingly.
I often hear horror stories from people cruising and the simple breakdown repairs costing more than they thought proper if they were in their home waters.
I do most of the work on my own boat, so I cannot recommend anyone at this time. I will ask around the marina for recommendations if you friend is having problems locating a qualified mechanic or boat yard.

Wilkie, very good point!
I just saw the boat from the exterior and noticed that the mainsheet is attached to a strut / fixed point in the stern opening. No traveler...and one cant be added to the stern with out major butchering...and removing electrical in which is on the transom..speaker..etc. Not sure I can live without a 100% functional traveler.

I've got a buddy with a Bristol 40 whose engine went up on his way to St. Augustine and he is at a marina in NC that charges $2 per foot per day to be in the water. (I am awaiting an email to tell me exactly where he is and what model Westerbeke he has) He needs to be hauled for a new engine and needs to get it done at a reasonable rate. He has already been raked over the coals by a couple of people down there ($500 to install a solenoid on his starter and wasn't even done right).
His plan was to live on his boat while he looked for a house to buy down there and this episode has put a major monkey wrench in his plans.
If anyone needs anymore details, let me know and I'll add that to the next email with location and engine model #.
Thanks in advance -
Paul

Ok, He is out of my knowledge base, although we have been to Sea Path Marina. One of the Sailboat friendly marinas in the area.
I looked at the Salty Southeast Cruisers Net, http://cruisersnet.net/ one of the first web sites dedicated to cruisers. They actually have an article from Boat US about Bennett Brothers boat yard in Wilmington NC. By land in a car, should be a short trip to Wilmington from Wrightsville Beach.
I would recommend him at least contacting them to solicit help. This article start out with a warning, don’t take your cruising boat to a recreational boat repair shop! He is currently in Power boat heaven, in full season.
Keep us posted on his progress!

Just got word of where my friend, Tim is. He is at Seapath, Wrightsville Beach, NC. He is on the road headed there now hoping to spend the night on the boat. He is planning on replacing the engine but I don't know if he has found one or not.

Thanks Steve -
When he told me how he'd been screwed over by that one person I was surprised as I am from the south (Texas) and generally view everyone down that way as honest and dependable but there are bad apples in every bunch unfortunately.
His name is Tim Fuhrmann and his email is Sa… [at] writebyte.net so you know who it is if he emails you.
Thanks again -

I have experience with Hurricane boat yard, none if it good. I'm sure
any other marina would be preferable.
