Mainsheet on CAL 32-2
rk… [at] yahoo.com2014-07-29 03:19 UTC
Hello all! My CAL 32-2 came with 1/2" sta-set mainsheets. These don't move easily through the clutch and I am thinking I will replace them. I can get a different line in a smaller size but I wonder if the 1/2" sta-set is overkill. What are others using for mainsheet?

I use 7/16 on my L-36. There isn't much load on a mainsheet afterall you
can pull it by hand so there is maybe 50 pounds on it and 7/16 StaSet is
good for 6,600 pounds. Even if you are concerned with stretch you get 1% at
660 pounds so less than 0.1% or maybe 1/16 of an inch on a beat where the
load is high.
The reason to use anything more than 1/4 inch is what feels good on the
hand. My friend with arthritis likes 9/16.

Thanks guys! I was thinking 7/16 was strong enough but if everyone had 1/2 I would assume there is a reason. 1/2 is definitely too big for my clutch. The only question would be if I had to pay more for a line to get the strength of the 1/2 Sta-Set.

Sta set,
Just make sure you buy the next size smaller or so than you take in there, the line swells and people have a tendency to replace it with the same size that is swollen, with in months the new line swells and has a hard time getting thru the blocks.
Are you using a 4:1 or 6:1 mainsheet system?

Well I just put the new 7/16 mainsheet on. It moves smoothly through the clutch which I am not sure is rated for 7/16. If it bothers my hands, I will drink more beer. Randy, it is rigged 6:1.
