I missed which CAL model this leak was on, but the wood "threshold" (what would the true marine term for that be?) on our old CAL 21 was 2 pieces of wood, one inside and one outside. The inside one was flush with the edge of the fiberglass opening and the outside one was about 1/4" below the top of the edge. The bottom of the companionway panel (or bottom drop board if we were using our 3-piece drop boards) sat on the outer wood piece and the top of that piece was beveled slightly down from the top edge. (I'll see if I have picture, but doubt I have one that would really clearly show this) Rod Johnson, "SUNBIRD" 1979 O'DAY DS II former co-owner of "NODROG" 1970 CAL 21 #285 On 25 Aug 2014 16:08:22 -0700 "za… [at] yahoo.com [Cal_Boats]" <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> writes: Does anyone have a picture of what this should look like? Was the wooden threshold glued down or was it just sitting on top of the fiberglass?

On our old CAL 21 the 2 pieces of wood (Teak) that made up the threshold were held in place by screws through the inner piece that screwed into the outer piece with the fiberglass sandwiched between. I wonder why your fiberglass slopes towards the cockpit and mine slopes towards the cabin? They are the same year and model of boats unless your's is still from the 2-27 and mine was a 3-27? I will take a better picture next time I am at the boat and see how I need to fabricate this bottom threshold so it fits nicely and doesn't need caulking. How do you suggest I secure the threshold to the fiberglass? I have plenty of Butyl tape from when I rebedded my old Chrysler 22 but I don't know if I want to screw into the fiberglass when obviously the factory didn't. The #1 Worst Carb Ever? As it happens, I skipped out of work early and went sailing tonight. What I learned is that I know very little about my boat. Mine slopes towards the cabin as well, however there is a lip there that prevents water from coming in. The bottom drop board sits fully on the cockpit side of the lip. Well lucky you ;) Thanks for the pictures. I am not able to get tot he boat just yet, but I am pretty sure mine does NOT have that lip on it like yours does. Otherwise it shouldn't be leaking.

Re: [Cal_Boats] Los Angeles Harbor has breaking waves

This morning I went to Cabrillo beach and discovered and photographed breaking waves inside the Los Angeles light house making the entrance extremely dangerous. Also there were perfect surfing waves not only on the outer beach but inside on the calm side. As the Westerly picked up it created an offshore on the inner beach creating perfect tube shaped waves between 2 and 4 feet. The calm side beach has not had surf since the 60s-early 70s. Additionally, I got a couple pictures of the water crashing on LA light about 1/2 way to the top. An exciting day! Mark A.
