Just wanted to point out that I do redecking from the inside. At least on CAL 25s, the inside skin is thin (a layer of cloth and som crappy paint that won’t sand). Is your deck sandwich done with plywood? Does the area have lateral interior stingers? If my approach is possible, I can send you some methods and tricks (including shower caps). It had many soft spots on the deck. I researched the heck out of this. I ended up selling the boat in 2006. I didn't like the boat enough to spend the time and money on it. The person that bought the boat was aware of the deck condition and the boat was priced accordingly. I know him and he has been sailing the boat as is, still owns it and has never fixed the deck. It is getting softer and softer. All my research back then steered me towards the West System products. The hard part is drying everything out so you can apply the epoxy. I think taking up the deck to re-core everything would be a difficult and expensive job. And I wonder what it would look like when completed. I guess you could hide all the work with deck paint and non-skid paint. Of course the condition of the boat overall would determine if even worth spending the money for core repair. Good luck. The foredeck on my 29 has a number of soft spots and I'm wondering how to address them, either the 'drill holes in the effected area and fill with epoxy' method or replace the whole top/core of the foredeck - has anyone done this? Any helpful suggestions gratefully received, especially if anyone has put in an anchor locker. Thanks and regards, Grae Morrison Destiny - 1972 Cal 29 #437 Red Bank, NJ

Thanks Charlie, Allen, I think at this stage you're on the money Charlie, going from underneath is the way to go on a 29. Now I just have to see if I have the appetite for it this winter (or next, you know how that goes) Again thanks, Grae On 9/18/2014 16:29, 'Husar, Charlie [USA] (ASE)' hu… [at] bah.com [Cal_Boats] wrote: > > Just wanted to point out that I do redecking from the inside. If my > approach is possible, I can send you some methods and tricks > (including shower caps). > Charlie: The Cal 20 is the same, except that the overhead isn't painted. I assume it's just resin. Last fall, I had noticed water intrusion that spread fore and aft in a line a couple inches wide (at least the bottom ply of the core showed that; other plies might have spread it athwartships). I was alarmed, of course, and I cut off the inner layer of glass in the wet area so the core could dry out over the winter. The glass had delaminated in that area. I also repaired the small deck crack from the corner of the forward hatch that was letting the moisture in. This summer there was no evidence of moisture intrusion, even with several major deluges, so the problem is solved. The core does not appear to have rotted. The deck repair (epoxy and fiberglass) has held up. My thought was to re-cover the area where I removed the glass with some wide fiberglass tape and epoxy. My question is whether the glass on the underside has any substantial structural value, or if it's mostly just a way of covering the plywood overhead. The deck does not seem springy. The missing glass just looks bad (makes it look like the boat's owner doesn't give a damn). We've had a cool late summer and fall so I may have to wait for next spring to do the work.
