Identity Crisis.

Greetings to my Cal family. I have been on hiatus for a few years – off list; Hanford Nuclear contamination clean-up, Arctic Assignment, Retired, Heart attack, Kidney failure, Bought a boat yard, Watched my mom get eaten by the cancer monster. But… Messed with my love… California Girl – 1967 Cal40 Hull #94. Wow - what a few challenging years – we all do it --- - but... All the while I remembered all my ‘lectronic friends on “the list” and missed you all... BC & Roger Jones passing punched a hole in my heart… So what is up with dEmO? The Cal love affair continues, California Girl gets faster every year, mostly because we find younger crew to push this beast to her limit? With the boatyard, some fun things happen. We cored the bottom for example (on the interior and keel) Whoa – massive stiffness resulted – the pounding hull grenade is gone going to weather. If you ever have the chance, buy a boat yard and live the boating dream every single day… it is so cool. You get to do ultimate messing with your boat! For our coming back out party following the shadowy period we selected to do the Pacific Cup.. for the tenth time. To get ready we did a monster project on California Girl. The most fun project was letting my crew (from three countries) each paint a part of the bottom for our race to Hawaii… I thought the results were fun enough to share….. USA – Brad, Victoria and dEmO CANADA – Ehhh? 2 hosers on board – Al and Chris New Zealand – World famous Peter Pooh@! (the rudder) My Mom’s logo “Betty Boop” – sailing gear overboard half way. Off to Hawaii just after the 4-O-J We finished 1st, 2nd, and 3rd all at the same time. 1st Cal 40 ( of 3) to finish, corrected 2nd in fleet, and while faster than all other Cal40’s 3rd in the one design trophy… A new rule proclaims the heavier a boat is; the deeper it floats in the water thus a longer the waterline; and a rating hit downwind due to the extra length…… - WTF??? (idiots) – maybe next year we’ll fill the boat with concrete and sail at periscope depth, and beat everyone?

Hello, California Girl, Nice paint job, and congrats on the wins. You mention, "With the boatyard, some fun things happen. We cored the bottom for example (on the interior and keel) Whoa – massive stiffness resulted – the pounding hull grenade is gone going to weather." Can you elaborate? I'm curious about how coring did away with pounding. (Or maybe I'm drawing an unfair conclusion that coring did away with pounding.) I've always had the belief that pounding is a function of wave height - and U-sections forward vs. V-sections forward. Maybe hull weight is playing a factor because California Girl is now heavier.
