227 keel design
John b2014-09-21 01:40 UTC
Today my boat was hauled for the winter and I was able to inspect the
damage to my keel caused by an inadvertent contact with a pile of rocks.
Fortunately the damage was not too bad, but it made me wonder how the keel
is constructed. Is it a fiberglass shell that a chunk of lead is inserted
into or is the lead mechanically attached in some way? Also does anyone
know how thick is the fiberglass on the bottom of the keel.

Fiberglass shell. Not sure how thick the glass is on the bottom.

John
I did the same thing with my Cal 2-25. I ground in 3/4"-1" to bevel the new glass layup at bottom and sides of leading edge of keel. Reglassed it with West System 5 years. All good yet.
Good luck!
