If that is Serendipity I know it well as I know the current owner and previous owner. Both owners took very good care of her and as you mentioned did a lot of upgrades. As to its sailing ability the previous owners took it from the Chesapeake up to Maine and had no issues that I can recall. Hopefully Donald Dutton will repost his story about his experience in huge wind and seas in the Gulf of Mexico in his 33-2.
I think you'll be happy with it unless you like to work on boats because you wont have much to do.

I am the proud original owner of a Cal 33-2 and can attest to it's sailing ability, cruising ability, and live-aboard-ability! As Paul mentions, I have crossed the Gulf of Mexico (995 nm in 6 1/2 days) and survived a 90 knot storm with 36 foot seas that foundered the Texas A&M research vessel 5 miles from our position! There was absolutely not change in bulkheads, openings, etc. from the stress on the boat from that once in a lifetime storm.
I have raced the boat in cruising class and done very well against longer, newer boats of other makes. Have even sailed her through Hell's Gate and across Long Island Sound when we cruised in a group from Liberty Landing Marina on the Hudson. I got so far ahead of the other boats in the fleet on the Sound that we anchored and had lunch while waiting for them to catch up with us!
Favorite things about the boat -- ease of access to the diesel, large V-berth for my 6' 2" frame, easy galley to work in while underway due to rounded design, tall mast for good power in light winds, plenty of winches in all the right places, very well balanced helm (have sailed 20 miles to weather without touching the wheel), deep cockpit with large drains to keep seas and rain out of the cabin, no blisters ever, etc., etc.
It is enough to say that, after sailing on others' boats many times, larger and smaller, I have never been sorry that I bought my Cal!
Donald Dutton, 1986 Cal 33-2, "Quantum Evolution"
"Twenty Years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the things you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." ........Mark Twain

Every boat is going to be different. I went from a CS 30 as my first boat (had to dock it in a 4kt current between 2 boats my very first time) to a Cal 39 and they are WORLDS apart in handling. I recommend finding an old salt to go out with you and show you how to handle her. If none is available check out the Annapolis school of seamanship for docking classes. Its not too big of a boat for you as long as you are prudent, put your ego aside and ask tons of questions. I would take someone along who knows what they are doing the first 20-30 times you go out. If there is any weekly racing going on volunteer yourself as crew and pay attention.
It can be done just don't rush anything and get as much instruction and on the boat help as possible.

I'm afraid when I'm ready to move to something larger there won't be much left of the one I have. Actually she's pretty tough.

The CAL models built at JENSEN MARINE's Marlboro, NJ plant were just as
good as the Costa Mesa. CA plant! The last (non-Lapworth) CALs which were
built at the O'DAY/ CAL plant in Fall River, MA are still very good, but
economics of the times may have led to boats that were built closer to
minimum standards. These boats also had balsa-cored decks instead of the
plywood core used in the older Jensen Marine built CALs. The later CALs
(1985-89) are still GREAT boats, and I would not shy away from them if
looking for a boat in the sizes built at that time. Most (but not all) of
the CALs found on the East Coast may have been built at Jensen's plant in
New Jersey or later at CAL Boat's plant in Florida (1980-85?).
Our 1970 CAL 21 was built at the NJ plant. My Day Sailer II was
(obviously) built at the O'DAY/CAL plant in Fall River, MA.

Loren, what is the hull number, and where are you located. For CAL 25s, after a couple years (starting in 1968 or so), hull numbers 6xx, 8xx, 10xx, 12xx, on up to 18xx, were East Coast. 7xx, 9xx, 11xx, on up to 17xx were built in California. I think that was also true for other models. Even first digits East, odd first digits, West.
Last CAL 25 flat deck was built in 1976.

99 percent sure your boat came from Costa Mesa, CA. Kinda like finding old lost relatives.
Cheers

Loren, what is the hull number, and where are you located. For CAL 25s, after a couple years (starting in 1968 or so), hull numbers 6xx, 8xx, 10xx, 12xx, on up to 18xx, were East Coast. 7xx, 9xx, 11xx, on up to 17xx were built in California. I think that was also true for other models. Even first digits East, odd first digits, West.
Last CAL 25 flat deck was built in 1976.
Cheers
Charlie

Hi. We are on a first name basis on this list.. Quite a friendly place.
Best reference is sailboatdata.com
http://sailboatdata.com/viewrecord.asp?class_id=1960
Numbers they don’t give can be estimated since the drawings are to scale.
Hope This Helps

What is the mast height, clearance on these boats?
