radar mast

ca… [at] gmail.com2014-10-06 00:58 UTC
Through a stroke of good fortune, I have acquired Raytheon RLC 70 and 24" radome. My intent is to build a radar mast from 2 1/2" 3/16" sidewall tubing and mount the unit vertically at Nemesis' stern. The tube is 10' long, and I will put a flange on the bottom to bolt it to tiny "deck" at the starboard corner of the top of the transom, and secure it to the outside of the pushpit. I will then mount the 17# radome parallel with the horizon. My question is, should I make the top plate tiltable to accommodate heel, or is this overkill? I know a lot of units are self-leveling, but they cost the moon and the feature may be as much to justify the price as anything else. The radar's primary purpose is to help me avoid things that go "crash" in the fog. I am not concerned with distant landfalls. I'd really like to keep this project simple, but on the other hand I don't want to ignore something that I should not. What says the list? Fred Haas 3-30 Nemesis Tacoma

I built mine for my 34. Non tilt. Works like a champ. Most of the time when I have really used the radar I'm not heeled over much. Thanks, Chuck. I'm going to follow your lead and make my top-plate non-adjustable. Fred Haas 3-30 Nemesis Tacoma
