Coating on Hull Gelcoat

Hello All! I have blotches on my hull gelcoat that a fiberglass guy told me are probably because of a protective coating originally applied during manufacture that has deteriorated. Has anyone here experienced this? Did you remove the coating somehow? Rick 1988 CAL 33-2 "RIFF RAFF"

I know of no “protective coating” applied to a Cal boat at manufacturing… other than the gel coat… so I am lost on that explanation. Depending on the reason for blotching… and the term is somewhat vague – here’s what we do to gel coated boats. When we detail a hull, that is gel coated, it is best to start with the least intrusive process that works, Basic detailing steps from intrusive to least intrusive, except the on off® step.. 1. Pressure wash / depending on your green streak ideology… wash with a boat soap 2. On Off® the hull to bleach gel coat and extract stains. (Muriatic Acid, Phosphoric Acid, Oxalic Acid mixture) – this should always be a first step. 3. Badly stained areas may require wet sanding, if they can be fixed un stained. Maybe start with 1000 grit, and no coarser than 800 grit 4. 3M Super duty compound; machine application, wool pad; equivalent to 1200 grit 5. 3M Finesse polish; machine application, wool pad; equivalent to 2000 grit or so. 6. Klasse One Step (acrylic cleaner / sealer foam pad or hand with microfiber towel) or Collinite 885 (paste wax), machine application new wool pad 7. Klasse sealer (acrylic sealer foam pad or hand with microfiber towel) Kind regards, *´¨) ¸.· ´¸.·*´¨) ¸.·**¨) (¸.·´ (¸.·' ( ......….-_/) Timm Lessley Lessley Marine, Inc. Thank you everyone for the responses! I had decided if I didn't get any suggestions here, I was going to try poly-strip. Looks like that is most suggested. Timm, what is "OnOff"? Is it a product? Rick 1988 CAL 33-2 "RIFF RAFF"

A mixture of muriatic, oxalic and phosphoric acid the is very strong and remove most organic / rust stains from boat surfaces. Do not use on soft metal like aluminum or human skin. Very inexpensive and easy to find at chandleries.
