sounds like you are missing the wooden threshold on which the bottom hatch board sits

I believe there should be a wood threshold on which the drop boards sit - and it has a lip behind which the bottom board falls from the cabin perspective.
Summer is flying....
Chris Campbell2014-08-25 18:00 UTC
Summer is flying, and now so is the spinnaker. I bought a used one plus
pole a couple years back from a friend who was selling his Cal 20. And
then it just sat in the boat because I'm usually sailing single handed.
But last Thursday I took the afternoon off work and called a friend to
go sailing. He had helped me step the mast in the spring. I said
"let's try that spinnaker." That meant untangling the rigging that's
been dormant for the last 15 years. The pole topping lift was green with
algae. The spinnaker halyard had a torn braid cover, but it was a light
air day and the core held fine. Everything went as expected, including
the usual minor errors with unfamiliar rigging. I was giving a running
commentary to my friend, who had never flown a spinnaker, and maybe I
did too much talking and not enough listening to myself--especially the
part about "outside of everything." But with light air, all errors were
correctible. We even got the sail down without dramatics. It is nice
having a second set of hands aboard, not to mention a second brain for
when mine has gone on strike.
I'll buy a new halyard this fall when the mast comes down.

Chris,
There is something mystical about "stealing" the wind under spinnaker. Attached is one of my favorite photos of Magic.
A sailing friend of mine flies his tri-radial spinnaker single-handed. It stays totally dry on take-down. He described the steps/procedure to me, but I'm not ready to try it out.
Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Setting would be easy, at least in light air, because my halyard runs
back to the cockpit. Take-down would be another matter.

Does anyone have a picture of what this should look like? Was the wooden threshold glued down or was it just sitting on top of the fiberglass?

That was a sweet take down. I wonder what he used to control the spinnaker halyard.
Thanks,

I think he just cut the halyard. Someone said to take down a spinnaker you
pull on one corner, keep one corner secure, and let the other one run free.
If you look again, you will see keeps the guy secure until he has all the
rest of the sail stuffed in the bag, then he cuts that. But I think he
just opened the clutch on the halyard.

Cal engine controls
Joe DeMers2014-08-30 13:22 UTC
The original controls were junk. I can supply either a used, 2 lever
control, just like the original type, or a new single lever control. Joe

Hi Joe,
I have a 1972 Pop-Top. I need the tiller head - I’m thinking/hoping they are the same. Could also use a rudder. What condition are they in ? Maybe someone on-list knows if these components are interchangeable.
Thanks !
Steve

Hi Joe,
I’ll wait on the rudder until one of our list mates replies about interchangeability.
The OD of my rudder is about 2-5/16 or so. If the one you have is close I’ll give it a try.
Please contact me off-list .
Thanks !
