Hi, Nick. Which boat is this for? We use plywood for CAL 25s, which is a deep bilge encapsulated style set-up. I’ve edone a couple replacements using marine ply, although others recommend something with hardwood plies in it.
The CAL 25 has lateral plywood sheets glassed in the keel (would these be called stringer?). I built those up to floor level to provide addition floor support. Also went to stronger wood for the battens (right word?) that provide support for the hatch boards in the cabin sole. Also put some rubber at the top of those stringers to cushion the floor.I have some tricks for cutting out these sole openings so that the removed piece can be nicely used as the hatch board.
Can discuss further if this makes any sense and is useful.
Cheers

Hello, Anyone have suggestions for new floor boards, perhaps fiberglass sheets vs plywood? Just took out nice cabin sole ply with some rotted sections, but think fiberglass balsa or foam core may last longer and be more durable. Of course I have not checked out pricing yet, but know marine ply is really high so cost may not be an issue between the two.
Thanks in advance for your comments, this is a great site.
By the way my Cal 9.2 "Jade" is still for sale at under 10K with great a sail inventory in Detroit.
Our new Tripp 36 has been great the past few years now.
Regards, Nick

Hi, Tom. To think that I got to walk on that very same pilot house sole.
Take Care

Thanks for the memories.
We were in Trinidad from 8/94 to 5/95 on our Cal 46 Satori. We had the original cork panels for the pilot house sole, original from 1967 and it was getting ugly. They have been growing teak on Trinidad over 100 years and it is beautiful. I scored a delivery on a 85' Berger back to Ft. Lauderdale, so had another cruiser, a Swede woodworker replace the sole with 5/8" solid teak and in place of holly, used white epoxy filler. He did a magnificant job for only $300. When we returned and saw the new sole, we cried as it was perfect.
I wonder how much it would cost to do 80 square feet of solid teak today?
It is still beautiful.
