Reggie, actually Paul missed on one detail......
Tom Vandiver has a CAL 46, not a 2-46. His is one of the original 46
models (and I think, the boat once owned by Jack Jensen himself?) that is
more of a true motor sailer.

Subject: [Cal_Boats] Cal 2-46 Question
My memory is failing me. There is someone on this list who had, or still
has, a Cal 2-46 and had to swallow the anchor due to health reasons and
has an engine repair business. I think his name is Tom Vandiver, but
again I'm not too confident of my memory these days.
I ask because someone on the Facebook page "Liveaboard Sailboat" has just
purchased one and I referred them to the list as I am sure they will have
a lot of questions soon and I wanted to give them a name to refer to.
Thanks -
Paul

Hi All,
Thanks for the add! Yes, thanks Paul! That is the same boat I posted today. My name is actually Eli Ridenour. I use my daughters account on Facebook because that group is a public group. Anything I post others can see and I have some work friends whom I am not quite ready to share this with.
From what I understand Bill Lapworth retired on one of these. Sure seems like a sturdy boat with the full Keel and the thicker fiberglass. This will be our first boat. She seemed quite fast (fast enough for us) at the survey last week. We made 7knots with the headsail and the staysail only in what seemed fairly light winds. Has a feathered prop that seems in great condition (not much play in it). Our first fix I believe will be to fix a Diesel leak on the #4 injector, it only leaks when running. This was a repo boat and there are many parts to go through. Previous owner also left several books on board as well as charts. Everything you could think of.
Much work to be done but we are up for it. I was raised on a farm and am accustom to fixing about everything. We have filpped 4 homes now so I have some experience in woodworking as well. My occupation currently is in low voltage electronics. We are feeling confident in beginning this project.
We are loving her already. Some may call it bad luck but her new name is Genesis (new beginning). Again, thanks for the add!

Welcome to the club of Cal owners. We like our boats. Mine is a Cal 20
and I think I've got the best of all the Cals, although others will
disagree.
Here's one caution if you're new to boat ownership and to sailing.
Things that have the word "boat" in the title always seem to have a big
price premium. Sometimes there are alternative choices without the word
"boat" attached that are cheaper. As I have learned on this list and
elsewhere/, sometimes there is a reason why/. Tinned marine wiring
supplies may resist corrosion better. Alternators may be "ignition
protected" to avoid exposure of sparks to fumes. The gas I buy at my
marina is pricey, but it's also alcohol-free so it survives extended
sitting in the tank.
That said, I often enough make an informed choice to go the cheaper route.
You didn't say whether you had sailing experience or not. If not, get
some before undertaking anything that might expose others (crew, other
boats, rescue personnel) to risk. There's nothing that ends a sailing
career faster than overconfidence leading into a scary disaster.
Humility helps. And in my experience, if you don't have enough humility
when you start, the weather will give you some in short order. And when
you have some experience, it's a lot more fun.
