Paul, turns out it was an Albin Vega 27 which has now been “retired”. Matt is now in his early 30s.
[cid:image001.jpg@01D00E1B.33262C70]
Matt is now living on a strange looking sailboat on the dock next to where I camp Chicken Little (my CAL 25). Apparently, he conducts his ocean voyages on that boat. I’ll find out what it is
Cheers

Was that 32 footer an Albin Vega? We have a guy in our club who has one and like to single hand as well. He was headed up north a couple years ago (not sure where he was going) but got "stuck" in no wind and fog somewhere up there for 2 days (I think around Nova Scotia but don't quote me on that) and I think it got to him and he came home. He's married and in his 60's FWIW.

Well, Sam, I am in planning mode. In order to avoid the Panama Canal expansion and East to West passage at Cape Horn, I have decided to take a circumnavigation route. Of course I will stay away from the coast of Madagascar and the Somali coast as well. I figure to arrive in time for the 2016 Clipper Cove raft-up and soirée. I am researching availability of MREs and water makers. See you then.
By the way, in the summer, the Northwest Passage is now an option. There is a fellow here in Annapolis named Matt Rutherford who circumnavigated the Americas counterclockwise using the Northwest Passage in a 32 foot sailboat. I know him, and even lent him some tools when he was prepping his boat. Nice enough fellow, but he does have a bit of that far-away look in his eyes.
Cheers

I spoke briefly with Matt and Nicole at Strictly Sail Pacific last year where they were discussing their research projects and demo'ing the new WD Shock "big daysailer" which they sailed to Japan after the show. Have to say, the boat did not look nearly ready for an ocean voyage, but just goes to show what can be done with a solid hull, seamanship, and good weather. The link has info on what I assume is the "strange looking" boat he's on now. Definitely more vessel than his retired Vega.

Remarkable. I'm a teenie bit jealous. Armed with my Cal 24 with a better pair of cockpit drains, a good ice pick, and a death wish, maybe I could do this too. Unfortunately, I love to take a shower every day. Aarrghh!!
