Cal 29 Rudder Post
Grae morrison2014-12-15 14:30 UTC
Seasons greetings fellow Cal listers!
Towards the end of last season my rudder suddenly (indicating a break of
something rather than a wear sort of thing) became very stiff to turn, I
thought at first it was the wire overlaying or somesuch but on
inspection all appeared ok, anyhow I carefully limped to my haul out
(with an emergency rudder on hand if needed) and have now dropped the
rudder - wow, I knew it was going to be tight down there but I must have
spent the best part of an hour on my head...fun, fun, fun! - even after
the quadrant was removed completely the post was still very tight but
eventually, and with a judicious use of lubricant, I managed to wiggle
the rudder out, when it came there was also a certain amount of what
looks like the remnants of a plastic sleeve, some of which I'm guessing
slipped behind the sleeve and caused the tightness.
I have searched long and hard through multiple forums and haven't found
anything that even resembles a write up on the composition of the rudder
assembly, does anyone have any idea of how this is made up, is there a
sleeve, can it be replaced etc etc etc.
The post itself shows some sign of wear but nothing substantial and not
in any specific locations like at the bush.
Thanks and regards,
Grae Morrison

Some people have found that their rudder gets loose over time and solve the
problem by inserting a shim made from a two liter pop bottle.
