Thanks Dan ,Allen
I have been on the Cal site now for a couple years now, so I have been getting familar with the boats. I was previously looking at a 36 Cal when I saw the 34 that would fit our needs.

Dave:
As with any boat, a good survey of both hull and engine are money well spent. I own a 1978, 34 Mk lll and had both done before we bought. They still missed a few things but I'm not aware of a common flaw for which to watch. The single biggest expense would probably be that engine, if original. Parts on that vintage are nearly impossible to find so don't overlook it or ignore the potential financial impact. If you need to re-power it, there are wonderful resources in this group.
You'll find several other good bits of info on this Cal web site that can't be found anywhere else. Check the files stored here under Cal 34. I doubt there is a better sailing 34 footer in the modern production boat market and we are very happy with ours. Good luck.
Fair winds & calm seas,
Dan

HiI choose the 25 because I have been know to motor for hours in heavy steep seas. I couples the 25 with a 3 blade MAX prop. Unbelievable how well the boat performed.
I had 2-34. Sold the boat after 19 years.
Only reason I hauled the boat was I put a dripless packing system in and the Max prop.
I had a R-30 Fairymann. I purchased a mount that was the same width of the stringers. I did build large 3 inch shims for the proper height. As for moving things around in the engine bay. I gutted the bay and put things where I wanted them after the engine was in place. The one mod that I did that was the best thing I ever did was. I added a Large hatch in the cockpit soul. maybe 24x36 SS monster. I lowered the new engine straight down. I could work on everything with both hands. On the 2-34 in worked out great. I don't your boat, are they the same?Since I sold my Cal I not on the list that much anymore. Give me a call if you want . 661-9443593 I'm in Ca

didn' see it.
When doing the re-power, specify elevation of motor mounts as well as width. Mine cam with the correct width but the stringer had to be modified/cut down to get the engine low enough.
Use this as an opportunity to replace exhaust system and upgrade it to ABYC standards. Exhaust hose which looks fine on the outside could be falling apart on the inside.
Be sure the exhaust elbow is sufficiently high above waterline. Not even the high rise elbow offered by Beta was high enough in my installation and I had to get one custom made.

Welcome to Phil Lewis of Porkland Oregon; owner of Soufflé. He’s looking at repowering with a beta 20 from Joe DeMers, any inputs from someone who has already done this? Tricks and traps? Cheers dEmO
