What a joy--the boat flew along but without any drama. I am always amazed at how effective a reef can be at the right time. Two other boats were out (3 including the local tourist schooner). One under jib, one under main, and me under reefed main & jib. I beat the hell out of the jib-only boat, a vessel of about 30 feet. Got back in before the thunderstorms came along. Chris Campbell >

Well, Paul, you’re going to get to shovel again Thursday. We have not had a Frostbite Race this half (Feb-Mar) – missed 5 Sundays so far. And it looks like Annapolis harbor might still be frozen this weekend. Whole thing could be a one day series on the 15th. Geez, I guess the Pacific Northwest snow drought isn’t so bad after all. Nemesis and I went out for a romp on Saturday afternoon. 55 degrees, sunny, wind 15-20 its out of the north. With a reef in the main and about half a genoa was 6’s and 7’s for about five hours. Put 18 1/2 miles under the keel and had a blast. Oddly enough, there was only one other boat out under sail. I did see about the top 10 feet of a racing mast sticking up above the water in a shoal area of Quartermaster Harbor, but that doesn’t count as sailing. hope ll of ou East Coast and Great Lakes people are enjoying our snow. Sking sucks out here, but there are compensations. Chris, you could just have left her on the mooring, and then you could walk out to take care of her. In the spring, Great Lakes ice sometimes moves in vast sheets and piles. Once it starts moving, the enormous mass means that it doesn't stop quickly. My winter mooring marker is a black antifreeze jug, on the theory that a black float may do enough solar collecting that it will melt a little hole for itself and not be hauled away when the ice moves. And there's a back-up plan, too. I have a second float on a second line, but this one is a couple feet under the surface so if the first one disappears, there's another one to grab. I have a little summer cottage on Lake Huron's Saginaw Bay, a large shallow bay that always freezes over. In 1946, the little place was knocked down when the ice blew ashore. My parents were living in North Carolina then, and my mother remembers going to a movie and seeing newsreel footage of the damage on the shoreline. She also remembers wondering why anybody would choose to live in such a place. Eight years later she owned one of those houses, rebuilt by the original builder after the ice incursion. Five years ago, ice came in again, over the seawall that stands about 10 feet above then then water level, and piled up about 20 feet high in the front yard, reaching within 8 feet of the house again. Once the big sheet of ice starts moving, all you can do is wait until it stops. It's a springtime phenomenon, when the ice is weakened by the sun and the wind blows hard onshore. Our local schooner here on the Lake Michigan side stays in the water and is bubbled. This year the bubbler couldn't bring up enough warm water and the boat has been frozen in. It's not thick enough to do any structural damage, but in the past ice has been known to tug out the seam compound and caulking cotton. It's been so cold here that I haven't thought much about iceboating. All sailors are masochists by definition, but I place limits on my foolishness. I've been riding the bicycle to work all winter (studded tires are legal on bikes), and the wind chill of moving at even 8-10mph (maybe less) is impressive. We were within 1/10th of a degree of setting cold-weather records for Feb. here. By the way, this is not a complaint. Winter is actually a fun and pretty season and there are many outdoor things to do to enjoy it. We all know what fun it is to have a whiner for a crew member on our boats. Same thing goes for weather whiners around here.
