Re: [Cal_Boats] Gooseneck slide coming off
Kevin Swart2015-03-25 01:21 UTC
I have used the inserts for installing the padeyes that my boomvang attaches to. Drill the right size hole for mounting and use the mounting tool. I'm happy with them.

Cal25Panache
3-use timesert/helicoil inserts.
option 1, I don't like because that's just more holes in the mast
weakening it
option 2, I think the slide would not take the larger hole without
making it to weak
option 3, I've never used either before although I read good write ups,
but the they're really designed for deeper holes and not sure they'll
work with the thin cross section of the mast.
Does anyone have any suggestions or has fixed this issue, or something
similar, before?
Thanks and regards,

This has been my biggest problem.
Go with Option 2. I have increased the size of the screw many times. I think I am up to a 3/8ths.
I didn't break the heads off this time, just wore out the threads. There is enough left for helicoils. I just have to drop the mast, to do it right.

wanted to put the boom back on whilst I had a spare five minutes, when I
looked at the slide which holds the gooseneck it was really loose and
able to come away from the mast by half an inch, I unscrewed the slide
and found that all but two (at the top) were worn smooth and the bolts
had were not holding at all.
I figure my options are:
1- reposition the slide lower (the cunningham strap always had the
boom at the lowest point anyhow)
2- drillout larger and re-thread the mast mounting holes
3-use timesert/helicoil inserts.

Hi, Folks. I’ve also done the screw size increases and the move the whole slider up or down. After a while, the screw heads get too large to sit flush, and thus don’t let the slider slide. Having done the a number of these things, I still like the hose clamps around the mast as a simple fix. Chacun a son goût.
Cheers

I used aluminum 1/4-20 Nutserts (or Rivnuts) to re-mount my gooseneck. Both this boat and the last had fixed goosenecks. The last got eight 1/4 inch S/S pop-rivets. Never budged. Have to be able to remove the gooseneck to get the Strong-Track off so wanted threaded attachment this time.

Charlie,
I have 2 hose clamps on mine now until I can get a permanent clamp built.

</div>Hi, Grae. In the past I've used SS hose clamps around the mast. Worked quite well. Another option is a hole in the front of the mast where you can insert a hex driver that puts a nut onto a machine screw that you inserted into the slider track from the back. You'll end up with a few nuts down inside the mast base before you're done. There is definitely a lot of creativity required for this nagging little (big) problem.
Cheers

Charlie,
Are you using electrical tape to prevent galvanic corrosion? The last time I did this I got pitting.
