Cal 33-2 Cabin sole wood options ??
Leslie Newman2015-04-08 15:06 UTC
We have a soft spot in our cabin sole. I've decided I would like to replace
the complete sole. Currently the sole looks to be around 1/4" teak and holy
plywood. I am thinking I'd rather go back with 1/2". I am wondering if
anyone knows a good supplier for the teak and holy plywood or if there is a
better option to go back with regarding the sole?
Thanks,
Leslie

Leslie, am option to wood is Coosa Board - - now used by boat manufacturers for interior flooring. Will not rot is 30% lighter in weight. Teak / Holly is really expensive. The Coosa for half inch is $250 a 4 x 8 sheet, but will need primer and two coats of paint, also not cheap.
Hope this helps, Nick

Leslie,
I have a 33-2 as well and had a soft spot at the base of the companionway steps. I elected to replace a section of the cabin sole with teak/holly veneer plywood. Mine was ½” thick. Purchased a 2x4 piece for $87 + $28 shipping from Noahsmarine.com. Another source is Boulterplywood.com.

We redid the entire sole in our 1987 33-2 with 1/2" teal and holly. I can't remember what it cost but it was rather expensive. I am not near the boat at the moment so cannot check the records. My recollection is that it took 2 - 4x8' sheets of ply and a bit of solid teak that I ripped into 1/4" strips to fit between pieces of plywood to proted the edges.
We used the old panels as templates. The job took about 2 full weekends to pattern and cut out the panels. The varnish took another 2 weekends since it needed drying time. It was actually a much easier job than we as really amateur carpenters expected.
We are vey happy with the results and think we increased the price of the boat by doing this. I would send pictures if I knew how to attach them to this email.
Good luck with which ever choice you make.

I did the cabin sole with teak and holly plywood on my L-36 about 15 years
ago. Epoxy and ss brads on solid teak on the edges. Public lumber $260 a
4x8 sheet now. I bought two sheets and had some left over.

Ps. I checked L-36.com/sources for the reference.
