Marsh, As I recall the 6V GC batts give the most Ah capacity for the buck. They are designed for cycles that will kill some of the lower quality "deep cycles" that are little more than rebadged automotive batteries. Calder and Casey book's both cover what works where best. The Wind & Sun guys have some good info: http://www.windsun.com/Batteries/Battery_FAQ.htm Footloose came with (4) US battery 6V GC's in series-parallel for a 450Ah 12V system house bank. They took abuse from a drain-bamaged Guest charger that baked them a couple times. They also recovered from a week where the marina was working on power, blew my shore power, and the 12v frig drained them ***flat***. 1st order battery abuse. Since they were mounted high and aft, under the lazarettes, I was considering something else mounted somewhere else. Anyway, before our Catalina week trip last month I decided to replace with (2) Trojan ST105's 6V's to reduce the weight and get back to "full strength". Less than $100 each, 225Ah 447min reserve at 25amps, I think the warranty is 3 years, first 2 full replacement. The old 4 went to a docmate / liveaboard where they are still ticking. As always, your mileage may vary. BTW, the wind and sun Iota DLS-55 with IQ4 makes a great 12V charger / power supply for well under $200 if one needs to charge upwards of 400Ah banks. Nope, you can't splash it, but mine's mounted in the stbd quarter berth. If it gets wet there, I probably have bigger problems. I have Cal T2, "Interlude" needing to replace batteries. I'm not well versed in batteries, just know I need two, any recommendations? Thanks Monte, Lake Conroe, Texas

It's already rigged for two. Can I get away with running only one without having issues! Guess I just answered my own question, mostly only running daytime and its only for starting the inboard motor at the marina. Oh no. I hope we don’t lose you, but I can understand you wanting to be on a more competitive boat. What I meant to say was two batteries are great if you are cruising, but not necessary otherwise. ha ha ha Please ignore my pathetic plea to my rock star crew-goddess who is deserting me for a J/70 this week. You can run just one as your start battery. If your lights are set up to be run from the second battery and you need to use them, just turn your battery switch to the "both" position. A good combination starting/deep cycle wet cell battery will probably be your best buy. Monte, We have a Cal 2-27. Magic carries two group 31 deep cycle batteries on an isolator and controlled by a 1-both-2 battery switch. It works for us, as we take Magic to the Bahamas and spend time on the hook. While we have LEDs most everywhere, we also run a Dometic CF50 CoolFreeze Portable Refrigerator / Freezer. Our diesel is easily started by either deep cycle battery. If you are only day sailing, you can probably get by with just a single group 24 battery. Michael

Wet-cell batteries are the cheapest, and unless designated maintenance free, will require regular checking and topping off with distilled water. Older battery chargers are made for wet cells. Newer “smart” chargers also have settings for the more expensive gel and AGM batteries, which do not require regular maintenance. Since I cruise and don’t want to be bothered with checking battery levels, I have 2 Group 27 AGMs. Harleigh Cal 31 “Kat’s Cradle” From: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com [mailto:Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com] Sent: Friday, April 10, 2015 9:54 AM To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [Cal_Boats] Batteries Thanks to all for the bits of advice!
