Locating A New Four Battery Bank on Cal 30
sa… [at] mascom.com2015-04-20 13:11 UTC
I'm installing a 2000W inverter, Engel refrigerator and solar installation on my Cal 30 and needed to find a suitable location for my new 4 6V golf cart batteries being installed in series/parallel.
Wanting to do this right, I purchased the huge battery boxes from West Marine that would hold two of the Interstate 6V batteries and allow them to be bolted down rigidly. These boxes also have suitable cable outlets for the 4/0 cables I'm using for the installation.
I had hoped to put all four below the V-berths but sadly found that not only wouldn't all four fit in that location with the boxes, I couldn't even get one of the boxes in place without removling 3 of the 4 cover supports. Once these were out, I could get a box in there and (with amazing agilty and contortions) managed to lower those two 65# monsters in place and hook them up in series. I even managed to get the cover on after marking all of the (temporary) connections.
I decided the the area below wide area of the V-berths would make a suitable location for the invertor and the second battery box. While I don't have the other two batteries out to the boat yet, I'm convinced that this will make a good location for this weight (right on the centerline) and plan on countering the 150# weight of this installation with an auxiliary fuel tank that will be mounted just aft of the cockpit.
Before I finish the install, I will need to glass in a couple of plywood platforms in both locations that will level the battery box and allow a firm bolt down.

********** 4/0 cables? WAY overkill for powering an inverter and refer.

how about on top of the keel .....on "Nemesis" their was a battery bank under the starboard bench group 27...the nice thing about V-berth it is close to windless this saves voltage drop
I really do not like 2 or4 6 Volts too many terminals ...and it seems that the water level on 6 volt s have to be topped off more often than 8D s ...on smaller boats i like group 27s for banksthey are DEEP Cycle and quickly "come back" to full charge ...plus if you need 12 volts ...you only have to carry one battery to where it is needed ...edward
