Cal 36 Aft Lowers Support
Last spring I brought my Cal 36 from LA to Houston through the canal. We had some wind off Nicaragua that broke the aft lower shroud attachment (I hesitate to call is a chainplate because it just is connected to the deck, not a bulkhead). But we were pounding into short period chop in 25-30 knots for 2.5 days.
The stress also hocked the deck around where the attachment is. This attachment has a beefy backing plate (2.5 in mahogany I believe), but because it isn't faired I assume it put to much point pressure on the deck, causing the hocking.
How do most Cal 36's have their lower aft shrouds anchored? Is the deck enough support for the aft lowers, and maybe the breakage was because of the conditions/poorly tuned tension?
Thanks,
Nick
